MG MGF Technical - Speedo Cable failed

Argh!
On the way home from the Goodwood Revival meeting yesterday the speedo cable snapped :o(

Had a closer look today- it appears that the longer of the two cables has failed.

It looks pretty easy to replace -anyone got any hints or tips?

Cheers ! :o)

Was going to point you at ultimatemg or the archive but then saw who you were.

Just been busy plugging you as the fount of all MG knowledge on the other bbs - do I need to nip back and rescind?

oh, bad luck BTW

JohnP

ROFL!
Cheers John :o)
Reckon it should be quiet an easy job though... I was beginning to consider changing to a digital sender...?

Errr, keep in mind yours's is the early design.
The newer has 3 parts. Could help out with the speedo side.
Meaning *Invitation to pick up at Hersfeld* ;)

However get all three parts second hand from the usual source.

btw, ... how long is the *short* and is it connected to the speedo ? Or to the gearbox ?
Would be interesting to know whether they split only the long and kept the lenght of the short.
Do you get what I mean ? Could same some efforts.

Dieter, I actually didn't measure the short cable - it's the one that feeds into the back of the instrument. I pulled out the inner cable, and I'd guess it was about 30-40cm long? The other long cable runs direct to the gearbox.

Not thought about getting a 3-piece cable. What would the advantage be of doing that? I wouldn't be averse to changing over to the 3-cable solution (the grommet around the short cable through the bulk head panel has perished, so it would be better to replace this anyway to prevent water leaks), but the 2-cable seems a satisfactory solution (except that this is the second time in nearly 9 years that it has failed!)

Time to change the car Rob, it's becoming unreliable - second time in nearly 9 years that it has failed!
