MG MGF Technical - Squeeky Brakes!

I'm sorry for asking this but I'm very technical with cars!

I recently had my brakes start squeeking when comming to a stand still and it's really annoying!

Any solutions to stop this? does it mean I need new brak discs?

BTW it's a 10month old TF 160.

Thanks
Darran

Obviously I meant NOT very techinical with cars!

>>does it mean I need new brak discs?<<
I very much doubt it - especially on a 10 month old car. new pads maybe ...
On some cars you can check the pad thickness with the wheels on (make sure the car hasn't moved for some time - those discs can get very hot), else you may need to take the wheels off and see how much friction material is left.
Some types of pad squeek anyway - my old Mintex pads used to squeek on gentle application (great when you're teaching someone to drive - horrible in traffic)
At 10 months you're pretty close to a service, I'd guess ?

Darran, the AP calipers need cleaning every 6months /6k as the brake dust builds up and jams the pads. You could also try the new ceramic pads for an improvement;-)

Thanks Mike and Steve, I've booked the car in at the local dealers for thursday anyways as they also have the recall adjustment to do at the same time so hopefully that should sort out the problem.

Mike, what's the best way of doing this (I didn't know it needed doing, BTW!!), wheels off and a squirt of Brake Cleaner??

Is this cleaning regime an MG owners' recommendation or official MGR??

My TF160 has just clocked 7k miles and also occasionally has a faint squeak just as the car comes to a standstill when driving slowly onto my drive, altho' this seems to be from the back.

Doesn't the TF have a low brake pad warning light????

BTW...when my car was in having its warranty paintwork repair, the bodyshop must've sprayed/cleaned my wheels with something that has turned the dust caps grey and produced golden brown (almost rusty looking) patches on all four disc hubs. Any idea what this might be and how to get the stains off??

Simon, I'm taking my TF 160 into the dealers tomorrow to have the recall done, brakes (de-squeeked!!) and some paint chip repairs so I'll ask them all about the cleaning etc.

BTW I did ask if I could clean the brakes myself and they said it's best to let them do it while it's under warranty.

>Doesn't the TF have a low brake pad warning light????

I thought that MGR didn't beleive in them, instead they have a metal piece wich scrapes along the disc when the pads get low leading to a really horrid squeeling noise continiously. I guess that people are more lightly to take it to a garge than if they get a red light.

Any news Darran from the service?

Simon, to clean the brakes I would recommend removing the wheels and the pads and clean the stainless thrust pads which should not have any brake dust under them, if you have to remove them to clean them it involves removing a stainless 6mm button head screw which is 'loctited' into the alloy body, good luck if you have to remove it, the screws are chamfered on the side of the head to avoid contact with the disc( Coutersunk or M5 would have been better)Refit the pads and make sure there is clearance between the pad and the thrust pads.Maybe you should ask the dealer to do it if it is still under warranty.
Sounds as though your wheels have had a 'wheel cleaner' applied , some are acid based and not recommended for alloys , sounds as though it was left on too long before being washed off.Would advise you remove wheels ASAP and clean down with soapy water to neutralise.

Got my car back on thursday evening after a whole day at the dealers and after loads of arguing over another paint issue I left and 100m down the road the brakes are now squeeking more than ever! the next day I phoned the dealers and they said that they "did clean the brakes!" and I replied I never asked you to clean them I asked you to stop them squeeking!!!!

So watch this space!
