MG MGF Technical - Starter motor doesn't
Sal's F has been sitting a month since last started. The SM now just makes a harsh vibrating sound. Any ideas on how to whack it or what else we should do? (Have tried rocking and have bump-started OK) |

Gareth, Hit it with a socket extension bar (or similar strong long tool) ... it worked for me. Its all the RAC man did anyway. Its found down the left handside of the engine bay halfway down, not too difficult to find. Before anyone moans about hitting the starter motor - it works its cheap, its a short term get me out of trouble fix. Ian |

Sounds like a flat battery. check the voltage as it may be this. |

Gareth That's the battery. Mine packed in a few weeks back and the starter just made a loud clicking sound, like the cog wasn't quite catching. It turned out to be the solinoid making a racket. New battery sorted it out. Stefan |

Partially off topic: Stefan, my battery is still soldiering on, but the starting problem whilst the engine is hot is continuing to get worse. Will get the battery changed over the weekend, and let you know if the symptoms are cured as we expect. Cheers - and Hi from Yimmy and I to you and Jenny (aka 'Wendy' ;o) Enjoy the Treffen you lucky people! |

I hope you didn't bump start it with the cat in situ. |
