MG MGF Technical - Starter Motor & Stuttering

Must thank Farnham Chris for helping me to clean my water temp sensor. Unfortunately this didn't solve my "Stuttering" problem.

This weekend I decided to change the diz cap, rotor arm, leads etc, but before I had a chance to change everything my starter motor went!

How much will a new motor cost to fit?

Still went ahead and serviced to car but haven't been able to test if the stuttering problem is cured but did noticed the rotor arm and cap were very well worn.

Sure it really "went"? This is another area of bad connectors ;O). A bit akward to reach, best done when the car is on a ramp. Check both thick cable and thin one to the solenoid on top of starter motor. If for any reason the brushes are worn / stuck a good slap with a piece of heavy wood fixes it temporarly....

Carl,

Luckily was at home and was having problems starting, motor kept on sticking, did eventually start but could feel the motor go and could sense a slight burning smell. Next time tried to start absolutely nothing.

Called out my breakdown people and he used his trusty piece of metal piping and that didn't work. So I guess the solenoid has burnt out.

That's possible Dave - or there is a problem with the electrical contacts to the motor - it can corrode and go 'dry'. Remove the contacts, thoroughly clean and reassemble. It costs nothing, and could save you a few pennies...

Have been sourcing a replacement Starter Motor online and have found one which says will fit a MGF 1.8i

Lucas Part Number LRS612

Does anyone know off hand if this is the correct part as I can get it for 30 quid plus postage.

Have got my local garage to come out to take a look at my car tomorrow.

Thanks
Dave Allen

My local garage picked up MGF yesterday and confirmed the starter motor had gone and replaced it for me. Picked it up last night and able to see whether my mini service I did over the weekend solved my "Stuttering" problem.

Wow, feels like I've got a brand new car, goes like a dream, unfortunately the weather was not ideal for a decent drive. Still managed to scare the wife, but then she thinks driving in the dark should be banned!

The only slight hitch is that the speedo doesn't work now but I believe one the cable connectors could have been dislodged while changing the starter motor. Anyway my garage were very apologetic and will sort it out for me Saturday.

Dave, nice to hear you're back on the road.

Hi Dave

I've had the ecu reset or cleared by the local MG garage cost is about 40 quid, they couldn't find any record of the stuttering and stalling but since this has being done the problem has not re-occured. 10 days of bliss although the fingers are still crossed.

Cheers
