MG MGF Technical - Steering Tight

The electric steering has become tight to turn in both directions would this mean that the ECu is defunked and how easy is it to change.
Graham

Has the fuse blown?
Stuart Elliot

No the Fuse is fine and every thing checks out ok but it seems that the steering is hard to turn in both directions at all speeds.
GRAHAM

Have you tried raising the front wheels off the ground and trying the steering without the ignition on just in case there is a mechanical fault.

If the electronics or motor fails the clutch should disengage and disconnect the motor from the steering (and the red light on the dash should illuminate). Mind you, without EPAS the steering is very heavy, even at reasonable speeds (seems to want to pull back to centre).

The EPAS is behind where the passenger airbag is. You have to remove the glove box and it's just a couple of nuts to remove to get it out. I have heard reports of bad contacts on the multiway plug. You could give them a quick squirt with WD40 and try before you remove the whole ECU.
Keith

I agree with Keith, there are a few things to check out before centering your attention to any one component in the steering system. For example, how does the steering feel alter when you pull the under-bonnet EPAS fuse?

The problem need not necessarly lie with the ECU - although I would recommend cleaning the contacts with contact cleaner (available from Maplins etc) - its something that is so cheap and easy it is worth doing and can solve mysterious EPAS related problems. However, the problem could also rest with the torque sensor (a problem that admittedly usually leads to self steering to one side or the other)

Good luck with your investigations.

My steering 'clunks' on right turns and uneven surfaces, only one clunk per turn, can feel it through the pedals... :-/
Timmeh

hope you find out the fault as rob and keith said. could be the sensor at fault with the steering to the left

hope thats helps you out
