MG MGF Technical - Steering wheel nut size...

Quick question..

Anyone know the size of the steering wheel nut that holds it on (the one behind the airbag module) - I'm in an MY2000 car.

Effectively, I need to know what size tool I need to get it off...

Cheers

Chris.

Nothing in the workshop manual. Just torque settings. Try giving the MGF Centre a ring as they'll probably know.

Just spotted this.

The wheel is held on with a 19mm nut, to remove you need a 19mm socket, a long extension and a reasonable sized ratchet (it's on there pretty tight).

To remove the airbag module you also need a T30 Torx bit and a 13mm socket for disconnecting the battery (both terminals), to avoid the (small) risk of the bag going off when you unplug it. Disconnect the battery and allow 15-20 minutes discharge time for the SRS system and you should be OK.

SF,

Yep, had the battery off a few times over the last few days to replace the seats.. now just the steering wheel to do. Also had the airbag module off and it was at that moment i thought "that's a big nut... too big for my tool"...

Now got a 19mm socket off a friend and hope to change in the next couple of days.

I have a breaker bar and large sockets if you can't find a more convienient friend (Balsham)
Will Munns

Will,

You live in Balsham? That's where I spend a lot of my time as it's where my girlfriend lives! You might have seen my silver F wandering round occasionally or parked outside her house... whoa, it's a small world :-)

If I can't get it sorted, I might take you up on the offer :-)

I bet you've heard me then, I'm the little black Midget which sounds like a motorbike :-)
Will Munns

Will,

I've probably seen it or heard it at some point as I've been frequenting Balsham for nearly 4 years now!

If I'm still having problems with the steering wheel at the weekend, I may drop you a line...

Meanwhile, you may see a silver F with a fully matching blue/black leather interior and a rather stupid out-of-place looking beige steering wheel!

Cheers

Aren't the wheel nuts 19mm, if so could you use the wheel brace to remove the steering wheel nut.
Chris Catchpole

Ok folks,

Got the steering wheel swap done now :-)

...and the horn buttons don't work... so I may have to swap over the buttons from the old wheel onto the new one... jesus, this ain't easy is it ;-) it never stops...

Glad it's the weekend soon so I can finish all the bits off...

Sounds like you did the same as me...mine started as an R reg blue VVC with ' orrible clashing green piping on the leather seats......

Now blue and black leather seats and door panels, along with T bar and speakers, leather cubby lids and new carpet all from a month old TF.....Just added a mk 2 fasia/console with the alloy gear shift trim.....looks fantastic.

If I can just get the passenger side window to work again...and the rear fogs..I'll be really happy.
I think I've screwed up the wiring somewhere....

Grahame,

Yeah... I had a "strange" car... bought it just over a year ago and didn't have the knowledge of Mk1 versus Mk2... quickly found out that my MY2000 (which it definately is as I've got the original purchase documentation) had a complete beige leather Mk1 interior - including the t-bar, cubby lids and also the old 5 spoke VVC alloys but it did have a Mk2 dash and console... I'm guessing someone whipped the entire interior out to put in a proper Mk1 car and then sold the newer one and got more money...

So, yep, over time it's all getting changed... and really, it's just the alloys left to change - I'm looking to change my 5 spoke VVC's to 6 Spoke Square VVC's instead.

But, as you say.. the new look is fantastic!

I even had footwell mats with beige edging for my "old" look... managed to get some Dylon fabric paint for £1.50 to repaint the edging and it came out as a complete colour match for the blue alcantara on the seats!

might get shot here......but beige does sound odd in a silver car....

Thought I'd finished...but I notice Mike Satur is now doing the roll bars in an anodised type finish.....

I have the original 5 spoke VVC alloys...but really like them, so may have them refinished when I've saved up for the full respray ( hardtop included )

Just recently discovered some new roads in the Derbyshire peaks..started getting up at 6.30 on Sundays so I can enjoy them before the rest of the world fills them up. 5th Gear or someone was up last year with a bunch of Elises and Boxters playing on the same roads.

...and the sun has started to shine again..can it get better ?
