MG MGF Technical - Stepspeed - Starting

Was out earlier this afternoon in town - slow going due to traffic. Stopped car to run into shop. When I got back, I noticed that the engine bay fan was running. Car started no bother. Stpped again ½ mile up road. Engine bay fan had stopped running, but when I turned the key, nothing except a two tone warning sound. Left it a minute and engine started as normal. Is there some sort of cutout that stops the engine starting if the engine bay is too warm? When I got home, after getting up some speed, engine started without any bother.

I've mislaid my handbook so I can't look for help there and knowing my luck I'll find my old one the day after I buy a new one. B& G are selling them for about £13 - is that about right?

Just a guess but perhaps it is something to do with the imobiliser setting itself if you leave the car unlocked for a while. Did you leave the car unlocked? I beleive some models require you to use the blipper to reset the imobiliser. But then perhaps I'm talking b......s.

Bruce,

Only left car for a couple of minutes(both times) and on each occaion I had a passenger sitting in the car (ignition switched on).

Started the car several times today without any problems.

Changing the subject. I was cleaning out the garage and I came across one of the little magnetic key boxed (haven't seen it for years). Anyway, got a spare key cut and hid it under the car. Bearing in mind that I've mislaid my handbook, how do I:

1) Disable the alarm in the event of me losing the "blipper"; and

2) Am I right in thinking that the code issued by MGR in a lot of cases is incorrect.

Up until I work this out, it will only be of use if I lock my keys in the boot.

Sorry, should have said that ignition was on so passenger could listen to CD player.

to disable the alarm place the key in the lock and turn, either drivers or boot lock will work.

Don't do it!, you can open the boot and replace the MEMS with an aftermarket ECU, you can open the drivers door and drive away without any security if you have the key!!

Will,

Thanks for the advice.

Sounds like the immobiliser tripping in. I think this happens if the key goes to or past position 1 for more than 30 seconds. Position 2 will stop the imobiliser tripping in. It's a security feature - don't worry about it.

My security code works, can't vouch for anyone elses. You basically enter the code via the driver's door lock, so many turns left, so many turns right, so many turns left, so many turns right.

Speak to your nearest dealership about the security code, i'm sure if you produce the V5 registration document they will find it out for you.
