MG MGF Technical - sticking clutch pedal

my clutch pedal sticks down when i have left it parked overnight. once i have flicked it back it feels ok .any suggestions
chris

Hi Chris,

Unusual... plenty of reasons why the clutch will refuse to operate, not so many for why it should be reluctant to let go! Has the clutch fluid level dropped? I'd suggest an experiment: before fully depressing the clutch, try giving it 10 or so half operations, i.e. stopping just above the biting point and see if the pedal returns to rest as you'd expect. Then push the pedal to the floor and release it, see what it does then. Partial seizure of the clutch lever as it passes through the bellhousing usually affects operation in the opposite way, i.e. the clutch doesn't disengage from the flywheel properly, but the fact that you only get the problem after the car has been parked overnight does point towards that as being a likely cause. It's the Achilles heel of the otherwise very robust PG1 gearbox 8-/

I had the same symptoms on my MGF. It turned out to be the bearing of the operating lever where it passes through the bell housing. It was sticking when cold and gave me clutch slip in the morning and worked OK once the car and bearing had warmed up.
The remedy was fairly easy. Dribble a little engine oil onto the operating shaft. Difficult to do because you can't see the point where the shaft passes through the housing without mirrors. Once you have identified the shaft (it's on the LH side of the engine compartment) you can run a little oil onto the shaft and allow it to work its way down to the bearing. It may take a few days for it to ease but in my case it worked and hasn't returned for the last two years or so. Car belongs to my stepson now and he's never complained about it either.

Thanks for the advice I will try lubricating the shaft

When you change the clutch, then you can fit the MS Lubricated shaft.
