MG MGF Technical - Sticking fuel injectors?
Hi, I've got an Ariel Atom with a bog standard 1.8 118bhp K-Series so I hope you don't mind me asking a question on this forum. It's been garaged for about 6 weeks and when I last put it away it was running fine. I took it out for a run this afternoon and it seems like it's only running on 2 or 3 cylinders. I suspect one or two of the injectors have gummed up whilst it's been sat in the garage. Is this a common problem on the K-Series? Any ideas on the best way to fix it? Thanks in advance for any help or advice that you can give. Cheers, Ross.

first thing: cool car, love it >Is this a common problem on the K-Series? No it isn't.... and nothing is mentioned about this problem when looking at threads about storing the F (1.8) for several months. BTW, 6 weeks isn't that long !!! Are you sure it has something to do with the injectors. It could be something with the electronics being a bit damp. HTH Erik (is the Atom available in Belgium ;-)

Thanks Eric, perhaps it's something else. Just in case - any ideas on how hard it is to take the injectors out to clean them?

Hi, never heared of blocked injectors on this BBS, which doesn't mean anything. Must of us I think grab only on the surface of the engine currently. (polish and wing about any problems) :) Though, may be you have got any dirty fuel to fuel sytem behind the fuel filter while installation ? Anyway, somebody out there who can fax or email him the required few pages from the workshop manual ? Dieter PS. Useless to offer them in german language, I think.

I know this doesn't tell you how to get them out, but on my old Pug I found a friendly local garage who had the means (don't know exactly) to clean the injectors. Used to charge about £10 - £15 an injector. After 75,000 miles it didn't half make a difference to the smoothness of the running of the engine. Maybe it's worth trying this route. A lot less hassle.

I have to agree, the problem is not likely to be injector related. More likely is an electrical problem. Are all the spark plugs sparking? Might also be worth popping over to the Lotus 340R forum - which has its engine similarly exposed - for more advice.

To clean injectors they are removed then placed in a cleaning fluid that is then subjected to ultrasound. Wynns do an injection system purger where a cleaning chemical is forced under pressure through the fuel lines this then cleans the injector by removing gums and deposits in the pintel area and also helps clean deposits on rear of valves. This system involves no dismounting of any parts.I believe other branded systems also exist. A good fuel injector cleaner added to the tank at regular intervals is a good prevention method, but it can also be useful to try first if you suspect that is the problem.
