MG MGF Technical - Stop lights stuck on.

My stop lights stay on constantly when the ignition is on. I keep getting reminded by other motorists. Is there an adjustment hidden somewhere?

Mike.

Hi Mike

Underneath the brake pedal there is a push lever that activates the brake lights when the pedal is pushed.

check this is free and not stuck.

Thanks Nick,

Just a Squirt of WD40 fixed it! Pig to get at though, Lieing on my back in the foot well with a torch, Wife stood behind shouting "On, Off".

If you find playing with the switch as you have has not worked (as it did not with mine) keep checking light operation. Mine worked for few days after jiggling it but failed again so lights on all time.

To fix fully check the rachet that is part of the switch unit by the brake pedal that you squirted with WD40. The whole switch unit can be pulled gently from it holder. If you pull on the centre plunger you may hear the racket move out. For some reason these lock down on heavy braking or just wear and cause the problem of lights on all the time. Pulling out rachet will fix problem.

This problem is often caused by your foot slipping off the brake pedal allowing the pedal to fly up. The plunger is pressed further into the switch housing and the ratchet takes up a new position. Lifting the brake pedal from the rest position will cause the same problem.

As can your friendly MG Rover dealer doing the MOT and not noticing afterwards that the brake light is permanently on!!!

More instructions for resetting the ratchet are in the archive. It is a known issue after emergency braking.
