MG MGF Technical - Strange Clicking noise...

My prized MGF is making a strange clicking noise from the rear left wheel... It's a 96 however is pristine and has had a new engine and gearbox which has worked perfectly for over 1yr. It will also raise up at one side when reversing... :<

I have removed the road wheels, checked the calliper, suspension, 32mm hub nut, etc and everything seems to be in working order. The only other thing I can think of is driveshaft…

Please any advice is drastically sought…

It wouldn't be as simple as a stone stuck in the tyre tread would it?

Hi Richard,

Were you able to reproduce the clicking with the wheel off the ground? Is it the same side that rises when reversing?

Might be useful to use another jack to get the wheel up to normal ride height while the car is up in the air, then check again.

The tires are stone free... I cannot get the wheel to click whilst it is on or off the ground. It will only click when the engine is switched and moving however when stationary its more like a metalic vibration. The raising up is really strange... if you are gentle with the power/clutch it wont raise right up though you feel the weirdness in the drive... hence driveshatf though however this really puzzles me...

Just done some further testing... with a gentle reverse it will start to climb as yoo lift the clutch then drop with a metallic crash as you depress the clutch again... This is really bad... :<

That's what I'd expect a failed engine/gearbox mount to do. The clicking may be coming from the driveshafts, if the gearbox/diff assembly has been moving around the joints will have been under much greater stress.
Time to get the engine cover off and see what is going on.
