MG MGF Technical - strange noise when releasing clutch...
hi guys... My 2001 mpi (22 000 KM) makes a strange noise when i release the clutch... everything seems good when i drive . when a gear is engaged , no strange noise... i can heard this noise ONLY when the car is in neutral... the sounds seems to come from the left of the car , it is very hard to describe this noise , because it's not so obvious... but it's a like a "clac-clac"... thank you , and sorry for my bad "technical" english.... |

Worn or damaged thrust bearing? Ted |
Ted |
i'm sorry , but i can't translate "thrust bearing" could you explain me ??? |
Benjamin |
Clutch thrust bearings usually make a screech or a whine when depressing the clutch, not usually a "clack-clack". I'm baffled! |
T Green |
not really a clack clack , but a clinkclinkclink |
Benjamin |
Thrust Bearing = when you depress the clutch pedal it causes a lever to press a bearing pad against the clutch fingers so releasing the engine drive from the gear train. This bearing if worn or damaged can cause some strange noises depending on the type of bearing and how it is worn or damaged. My comments are just a suggestion BUT if the noise worries you then it is best taken to someone who knows their 'cars' for them to listen to it. Ted |

Hi I have a 2001 1.8mpi and i get the same sound when the engine is hot and i stop in neutral with the clutch up. As my car is still under warranty i am going to refer it to Rover.. Ill report back on what they say.. Rgds, Chris |

In neutral and idling - my '97 VVC does have a slight grinding sound goes away when the clutch is depressed - it's the pilot bearing sometimes referred to as the spigot bearing - sits inside the input shaft and supports the clutch end of the mainshaft. Mine has been like it since I brought it 2 years ago. My Dolomites use to chop them out regularly - I use to have the spigot end of the mainshaft metal sprayed and re-ground - saves buying a new shaft. Others grind down the spigot bearing surface and fit a phosphorus bronze bush rather than the original roller bearing. However if it's clicking it may be a chipped or broken tooth on the input shaft or the cluster. If you are not sure have a mechanic check it out. |

Mine has the clack clack noise also, especially after a long fast drive. I doesn't worry me since I recognise the sound from other vehicles I drove/drive. (Like my Norton bike...) |

Bram : i also think that others cars can sound like this , but i'm a little paranoid!!!! :) |

check this site for more information about the worst case on what could happen if the clutch release bearing gets bad. http://www.tsg-404.de/mg/en/clutch_e.htm ;) Please notice, the worst case ! Not known what noises that one did before it damaged the gearbox housing. HTH Dieter <--- MoD ;) |
