MG MGF Technical - strange tinkling noise from centre tunnel

Hi guys; usually hang out over on the Elise BBS, but the GF has a TF and need a bit of advice.

When idling there is quite a loud 'tinkling' sort of tinny bubbling sound from the centre tunnel around the hand brake / ashtray...any ideas??

Do the coolant piipes run in here?? anything else?

Is it a case of TADTS or should we be worried.

cheers
bruce

The coolant pipes to the heater, handbrake and gear change cables run through the tunnel. The easiest way to check what is going on (on the F but I think the TF is the same) is to open the centre storage compartment lid and pull out the storage compartment bin. Then you can have a good look in the tunnel if anything is loose.

Thanks, I'll try that.

doesnt sound like something loose though...this sounds daft but it sounds like boiling water inside a tin...the thing is it happens even when cold and the temp etc is fine......hmmm

Very strange Bruce. I'd check to loose components as Spyros suggests (perhaps something gangling against the gear-selector cables?)

If you are convinced that it is a water sound (I think that it is unlikely, but not impossible), then ask your dealer to bleed the coolant and heater circuits under warranty.

Hope you sort this irritating niggle out Bruce - otherwise I suggest that you fit a noiser exhaust to the GF's car! LOL

well...it gets weirder.

Took out the storage (thanks spyros), and the noise is really apparent when you take hold of the coolant pipes (the lagged ones) and shake them.

I think its a squeak being transmitted all the way down the pipe from the front.

Basically I changed the position of the pipes and it seems to be cured...hmmm. very odd noise though...you'd swear blind it was a water noise.

cheers guys

It may be tottaly irelevant but... On my first F the cam belt tensioner came loose during the 1999 Prix des Alpes. This made a sort of rattling sound which was dificult to trace but it was fixed under warranty in about an hour
