MG MGF Technical - Suitable tyre size no 16's?

Hi folks,

Are these suitable tyres sizes for 16" TF 11 spoke wheels on an F?

"185/45/r16 on front and 205/45/r16 on the rear"

Cheers

Chris.

Another question on this...

Does anybody know the depth of tread in mm's that would be on BRAND NEW goodyear F1's?

Cheers

Chris.
Chris Tromans

Chris

My TF Owners Manual is at home at mo else I would look to see if those are 'standard' fitment sizes.
JohnP

Cheers JP... no worries, hopefully someone else will come along with the answer for me :-)

Chris,

205/45/16 are fine - I run these all round on Trophy 11 spokes.
Dave Livingstone

I think tread deapth on all new tyres is 8mm.
Steve Ratledge

Chris, I think the 185/45 on the front might be pulling the sidewall in a bit too much - 195/45s are the narrowest permitted IIRC

Brand new F1 tread is 8.5mm as measured from the ones in my personal stockpile
Mike Hankin

Mike,

Cheers... I'm just checking that the someone has actually sent me the front's size correctly...

And thanks guys for the depth measurements.

Cheers

The manual says 195/45 R16 80W for the fronts and 215/40 R16 82W for the rears.
Steve White

Cheers Steve,

What would this 'odd' size do to the handling of the car?

Worst case scenario it could make the steering very light & understeery, if the tyre isn't sitting fully flat on the road. You'd probably get uneven wear too.
Mike Hankin

Hi all,

Aha, they were actually 195's on the front and 215's on the rear - I double checked with the sellar of them...

They have 6mm of tread left on them a;; round and I've just bought them on ebay for what I would class a bargain :-)

Yippee... Velma's getting some new wheels!!!!

If they're 195/45 front and 215/40 rear, that's the Trophy spec and IMHO the best there is - I haven't found any other combination that works as well.

If you haven't already, get the tracking set to BBS figures (toe in) otherwise you'll not have 6mm tread for long on the inside edges of the fronts. Are the tyres the GSD2 pattern? If so you'll need the Trophy pressures, IIRC 28 front & 36 rear.

Will we be seeing Velma on a track day soon?
Mike Hankin

Dont put eagle F1 tyres on your car they are the worst tyre on the market and are also the worst for their price and it is the only part of the car touching the ground.
steve

A lot of people are very happy with the performance of GY Eagle F1's. If you mix D2s with D3s handling can be a problem on some cars. But with all 4 the same, either D2 or D3, they are fine. IMHO.

Hi,

Given that I am a Goodyear fan, the Eagle F1's are excellent tyres and, in comparison with others of similar spec, reasonably priced. Excellent in the wet and no sane driver would reach their limits in the dry.

I have 16" DS2's on the front (the originals) and DS3's on the rear. I have no problems with this mix.

I also have Venturas on the other Rover. Again, excellent wet grip, never get to their limit in the dry, and good tread pattern.

Regards, Kes.
Kes

I have DS2 on the front and DS3 on the back 24/28 tyre pressures.
Can anyone tell me if increasing the pressure will stop side wind sway on the motoways and if so
what pressures do peaple recommend?

Dave

They should put 20mm of tread depth on the tyres for ZT260s as they nrmally last for about 10,000 miles
:¬(

tyres for the F last for donkey's years in comparison!

Your'e right there Neil, I'm putting new Proxes all round this weekend, the rears, original specs, have just done 29000 and haven't yet touched the wear indicators, very close though.
