MG MGF Technical - Superlocking

Hi all,

I've been an MGF VVC owner for all of two days now and I have a quick question.

When I 'Superlock' the car I hear the servos in the door clicking away, which I presume to be the lock mechanism disengaging the tumblers in the door.

But 'should' they be making this clicking noise?

It seems to be coming from the passenger side door, on which the key hole has a blanking plate on it anyway. So why the servo?

I'm a little confused.

Thanks,

Matt.
Matt

When I lock mine there is a 'CHONK' noise from each door. When I superlock it, they go 'CHONK' twice.

That's the limits of my knowledge. ;-)

Superlocking disconnects the interior door handles and plungers from the locking mechanism thus stopping someone from reaching inside the car through an open window (or when the hoods down) to unlock the door.

This is why you should never superlock anyone in the car because they will not be able to get out unless they take the hood down! They will also set the alarm off anyway if they move becuase of the volumetric (radar) sensor.

So to recap, locking one blip just locks the outside door handles and sets the alarm.

Locking with two blips does exactly the same but disconnects the plungers and interior door handles. If all is well the indicators should flash four times in all. If they don't then it indicates that something is still open or the system thinks its still open.

You can still unlock the boot with the key when the alarm is set but don't operate the front bonnet lever!

cheers

I think you can lock someone in the car if you use the key - this does not set the alarm......useful if you have a dog!!

Matt, best way to test it is to superlock the car with the windows open and try opening the doors by lifting the pins. Good way to test the alarm also!
Steve

Thanks. I'll do that. Just wanted to really know if it was standard NOT to have a key lock on the passenger side door. And if the clicking noise I can hear as the mechanism disengages is usual.

Oh and the alarm works fine as I found to my panic when, whilst cleaning it on Sunday, I threw a bucket of water at the windscreen...Ooops!

;o)

Matt,
welcome to the MGF board!

You have owned the car for all of two days, and you have CLEANED it allready? I'm impressed! I can hear the Dark Side calling you from down here in NZ. :-)

Cheers, Neil

Yep, no key on passanger side, key on drivers side will still work superlocked, using the key disarms the alarm, but not the immobalizer. You can 'type' in a 4 digit key (which should have come with the car) which you can use to disarm the immobilizer if you let the battery in the fob run down.

...so how did throwing a bucket of water over the windscreen set off the alarm? I was talking about reaching in and setting off the volumatic sensor.

And if you, like me, don't trust the code you've been given, just buy a spare plipper battery and leave it in the boot. Then all that can go wrong is that you lock the keys in the boot...

A scarily simple but effective idea David! I like.

Neil,
A half-arsed job I'm afraid. I couldn't find my chamois!! :o)

Steve,
I would assume that the pressure shock caused by the water hitting the windscreen was enough to trip the volumetric alarm.

Will,
Unfortunately, although the car came with the service book, all I got was a photocopy of the Owners manual and no other documentation. The spare CR2032 is indeed a good tip. I'm going to do the same. (along with a screwdriver, because my half-bitten nails just aren't up to the job :o) )

David,
So looks as if I should be getting a double 'Chonk' rather than a single 'Chonk' and ~5 'Clicks' then huh?

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Matt.

'Chonk, click, click, click, click, click' rings some bells. There was a recent thread on the General board about clicking door locks, but it looks like it is now in the archives. Have a look.

I had this problem recently, and my mechanic told me that the cause was a small plastic part of the lock mechanism that had split, causing the lock mechanism gears to slip. It was fixed in the last service, and I have not seen the part in question. Only took a few minutes to pull the door lining off, and replace the part or just tape it together. Someone else said that as the door is locking properly, they just live with the clicks.

The superlocking part is burried within the door lock mech, the mech would have to be removed and replaced ~£60

Matt,

If you want a new manual, then I guess you could probably buy one from MG-Rover. It'd probably be ridiculously expensive but might 'look' good if you come to sell the car.

Or (very diplomatically), get one off someone who's just written off their F.
David Bainbridge

lol, I'm from Essex. We don't 'do' Diplomacy.

Matt,

If you don't know the Key Access Code to your car then I suggest you find out. A dealer can find out for you by using a Testbook computer on the car or they can get access to the database at MGR. If your remote locking/unlocking system fails for any reason then you could find yourself stranded. You can gain access to the car but the engine will not start until you have entered the Key Access Code from the driver's door. Do it now before you need it. And test it to make sure they gave you the correct code.
