MG MGF Technical - Suspension options

Hi all. I have a 96 MGF VVC and the suspension needs pumping at least once a year. Is this a sign that the hydrogas units have reached the end of their life. If so what are my options. Is it true that replacement units are no longer available? If so I guess my only option is the spring based replacement units? Are these all the same design and manufacturer or are some better than others? I'd also be interested in feedback from anyone who has fitted these units. Lastly is the conversion a relatively simple DIY project. Any helps and thoughts would be appreciated.

I think you're aware of what to do, personally I can recommend the Australian version (http://www.rv8mg.com.au/gallery/SPARE% 2BPARTS/mgf-spring-conversion-kit/45110), the I have had for over two years and is easy to install, however, is investigate the feasibility of car manufacturers install by regulations governing the place where you reside.

I'm with Eduard, I also fitted a set of the Australian units about 2 years ago and have found them very satisfactory and well worth the cost and effort in fitting them. It took me a day and a half to fit them but I'm 75 years old so the body is not as responsive as it was! I am always sad when I see these cars wrecked only because of the Hydragas units when a simple, low cost fix is available.

Happy motoring,

Hi Dave
I also fitted the Australian spring system, I think about 18 months ago. They work well, easy to fit and the car handles well. I am hard pushed to tell the difference. The adjustable shocks also help with the ride quality.

Crikey they're expensive! Mind you considering the price of a pepper in Aus is 2 quid maybe it's all relative! Any UK stockists for these yet?
Leigh Reid

Hi Leigh,

not sure where you get your pepper prices from, but at our local supermarket you could get a Kilogram for that,

Friend at work just returned from a visit down south to his wife's family. Just curious, how much is a lime down there?
Leigh Reid

Happy New Year Leigh,

I get my Limes free of charge as I have two Lime trees and a Grapefruit in my garden. Local growers have road-side stalls selling 6 limes for four dollars (about 3 pounds sterling. I think),

Happy new year to you too!

Managed to track down the article I was thinking of regarding limes. The views from my mate at work on pepper prices seemed to back this up!

Here's the article :

Hello Leigh,

I read the item you sent the link to, it reads as though it was written by a raving lunatic. His reference to mining operations near by suggest that his parents live in a remote part of Australia, Prices are high in these locations due to freight costs and rapid deterioration of fresh produce due to climatic conditions.

I guess that if you choose to shop at Fortnum and Masons instead of Tescos you might form a similar view of prices in the U.K.

All the best and happy motoring,

Alan

I sell and fit the Australian suspension units (sorry Clive) and find thyem to be fantastic in every way.. Spend the money and you'll never look back.. :-)

Cheers Alan, think the author was a woman, but pleased to hear the price of limes in Victoria is still sensible.
Leigh Reid

No problem Mark - as a prototype the one I was involved with was fantastic. In the conversion to production something was, er, "lost".
Clive Berry

Clive, do you have a UK car with these fitted? Any issues getting through an MOT with them?
Leigh Reid

Leigh,

I have yet to hear of any MOT issues with these kits fitted. There is little scope for the MOT tester to fail them.

Clive Berry

Thanks Clive, one to bear in mind then, even from a UK perspective.
