MG MGF Technical - Take your F to Tech-Speed...

....no I mean it, really do take your F to Tech-Speed!

http://www.tech-speed.co.uk/

Following my post earlier this week (see ‘Mayonnaise’), TS have undertaken quite a lot of work on my F and, bank balance aside, I have to say I’m delighted with the whole experience.

The customer service and expertise they offer is second to none, and their labour rates are nearly half that of MGR at £30 an hour.

For £819 I’ve had a new head gasket set fitted following HGF, five year service (including cam belt change), re-cored radiator, new coolant pipes, new rear brake pads, and new rear trailing arm.

They’ve put a cheap oil in for now just so I can spend the next few hundred miles flushing the system out with hot oil following the HG replacement, then in a few weeks I can pop back in and have it changed for some nice Mobil 1 0-40.

On top of that Roy made a round trip of about 15 mile to drop me back at work earlier this week after I dropped the car off, and when I returned to pick her up, she’s not just been cleaned but had a full valet inside and out.

Driving back today she feels like a completely new car, with much better throttle response. It’s been an expensive exercise, but it was money that needed spending, and I’m very happy with the result.

I’m fortunate enough to have them on my doorstep, but even if you live further afield, I can easily recommend that you make the journey, as even the time off work and petrol costs will be re-couped with their competitive rates.

We get quite a lot of posts complaining about useless dealers, so as a balancer it’s only fair to give praise when praise is due.

My only complaint is I didn’t get a Tech-Speed Motorsport sticker to stick on me bumper!

LOL - only comes with the suspension package! When your wallets recovered Jim, go back and get that done. It'll transform your car.

Glad to hear the guys at Tech-speed did their usual stuff for you.

I understand they'll have a TF suspension offering in the next couple of months, so I think I'll have to pay them a visit!

Yes membership of this elite club comes at a very reasnable price!
It's well worth it, and their service is 2nd to none.

Wish I was young and rich like Kingsley so I could think it reasonable - I think it's a lot for a road car. If I only drove the car on track days it would be different and I would spend almost anything.

2nd thoughts - no I wouldn't spend a huge amount on a track day MGF, I'd probably buy something like a Radical or a bike engined track day car.

Kingsley - it's envy really, I just do not have that much spare laying about :-)

Nor did or do I John. But I reasoned that spending a couple of hundred quid on the car was a good way of breathing new life into my well-used F - and it is considerably cheaper than buying a new car! ;o)

Mind you, I do like taking the car to tracks, and I do a bit of motorsport too, so I guess that I have that bias. But the TS mods do make for a very competant road car - as I know plenty of folks who've now taken the TS route, and never ventured out onto a track.

In my mind, the suspension mods are worth while and justifiable. Whether you can spend that cash ahead of other needy causes in your domestic budget is another question - and as you imply, a question of priorities ;o)

I needed the hydrogas pumping up anyway..

...so i did the techspeed mods at the same time....

...well it sounded sensible at the time!

but i'd highly reccomend it, makes the car much more predictable on the edge.
Kingsley

Over the last couple of years I've ventured into track days - never having done anything like that before. I can't afford a separate car for this and so my everday MGF does the job of everyday run-about and track car. I have to say that the F is remarkably adept at doing both jobs.

However, in the role of everyday run-about, the car benefits enormously from the Tech-speed suspension. The Bilstein dampers they fit are uniquely set up to their specifications for road driving. Yes, the package was developed using Tech-speed's expertise with Cup cars, but it was most definitely designed for road cars. When I picked up my car after the suspension work it was like driving a transformed car and I've never heard of anyone else who didn't have a similar reaction.

With a price of £595 to include the lowering knuckles and pistons, the Bilstein dampers, the compliance washers and the retracking, this is, IMHO, one of the best value modifications available for an F.

Employment future is not looking brilliant for either myself or my wife at present.

We recently made 50% of staff redundant and business is not yet picking up again at the rate we would hope for. Wifes employer is going through a sticky patch as well.

Perhaps if I don't change the bike this year I could visit TechSpeed? I am already sold on the idea but may start by changing to a slightly newer F first.

Like I said - it depends on employement future.

Unfortunately, this is all too common at the moment. I hope things pick up and you get to enjoy both the F and the bike as the weather picks up.

Cheers for the thought Dave, I've already been redundant twice and beat the third one by getting out in time.

That Bumper sticker is the best £700 (inc VAT) I have ever spent on the car, Roy even threw in a replacement Hydrogas unit at no charge because he had already done the invoice! As said elsewhere the service is fantastic! Only trouble is that I give the car so much stick since it was moded that I blew the head gasget on monday, full extent of damage is yet to be seen ... yup another HGF -----Doh! I think I'm about to get a bad pain in the wallet.
