MG MGF Technical - TF Brakes

My Car TF160 Has just had its 3rd service and I was advised that I would need to replace my Rear Brake discs and pads sooner rather than later.

Can anyone advise me on the best place to get rear discs & pads and how much these may cost.

PS She also just past her 1st MOT

Many Thanks

I am ready to be corrected but I thought the TF160 components were a bit specific and only from MGR. This may only be the front disk/pads for the red AP calipers. The fronts are a remortgage job whilst the rears are probably only a leg.

The TF160 uses the same rear discs and pads as the rest of the MGF/TF range, so they are cheap and plentiful, happily :o)

There was a thread on this very topic (rear brakes) on this board quite recently - might still be here if you scroll down, or if not, a quick search of the archives will bear fruit. There are plenty of internet providers of cheap parts, and even Halfords can help you out.

SL,
Do you drive around with your handbrake on ?, I'm surprised the pads & disc need replacing on the 3yo car, what mileage have you done, how are the fronts ?
Mike.
Mike (Mersea)

If as Rob says (and he is generally OK) then my earlier post to Sally?? was disks £49 each + vat, pads £38 + vat for rear axle set. Prices from my nearest Motor factor selected from www.yell.com

Not sure if they have changed materials recently but I was disturbed to find 'significant' wear on the rear disks on my TF after 9800 miles/12 months. The ridge can be seen and felt but I have not measured yet. Almost certainly not at service limit but ...

Milage is 32,000 miles

The front discs and pads were changed last summer at about 25,000 miles. When the front discs were changes they were so bad the were actually falling to bits taking them off.

I can't think of anyway a TF160 disc could "fall to bits" - even if you hit it with a sledgehammer.

Were they being "economical with the truth" ?

As regards the rears, broadly speaking they have very little to do compared to the fronts.

They are often more prone to seizure or disc corrosion from lack of regular heavy use rather than wearing out.

Have you had a good look yourself?

Poke your finger thru the wheel and feel the disc surface, compare LH/RH discs (and with fronts)

Discs should be smooth, shiny and ridge free where the pad contacts the disc.

If in doubt take it to another garage for a quick second opinion. Perhaps your guys are seeking to improve their turnover :-)

The certainly did fall to bits

I know this as it was a mate who is a mechanic, who changed them for me and I was there when he did so.
