MG MGF Technical - TF suspension recall

The Belgian importer has now finally woken up and sent a letter to all TF owners about the latest suspension recall.

The letter says the same as the UK letter I saw on Rob's website but I wonder if anybody has seen the actual recall notice circulated to dealers? Is there a copy anywhere on the web (Dieter? Auf Deutsch vieleicht?)?

What I wonder is whether there is more to it than the indicated torque relaxation of the lower damper bolt. If that is all there is, and given that I'm not on speaking terms with my dealer anymore - and plan to keep the car so don't need a stamp - I could just check that torque myself, since I know it is supposed to be 100 Nm.

Is anyone able to help me?

Per, you could try and go to another dealer and explain the situation. I understand the way the recalls are treated is the dealers send some sort of bill to the importer and they will pay for the work and or parts.

ours was done two weeks ago here in france, all was well, they did a check on the fuse box and had to tighten something as well.
you say the suspenssion should be torqued to 110 Nm, is this before or after the recall, did Rover up the torque to make sure it stays put ?

Don't do it yourself, get it to a dealer, they are properly equipped.

100NM not 110Nm sorry
pete

Please take it to a dealer and get it done properly.

Please.

have seen the mod, yes it is just torque, should also check the fusebox whilst car in the garage.

Thanks guys!

Looks like I can safely just tighten those lower damper bolts to 100 Nm and stare at the fusebox for a while... ;-)

Pete,
100 Nm is the specified torque value for the lower damper bolts so I guess the recall is due to MG Rover discovering that those bolts haven't been tightened properly at the factory on some cars.

I do know that if there is a bolt "loose" then it has to be replaced.

Take it to a dealer Per, please.

The VIN "plaque" under the bonnet has to be marked with blue paint i think so that everyone knows that the recall has been done.

Yep, I have copies 'auf Deutsch' from CH and DE.
The CH version is best detailed.

Anyway. NOT all cars have that bolt problem, from what I understood. Only some and this will be checked FOC.

On the other hand I wonder about the huge shouts about a probably breaking (or what) bumber bolt gets done.

The bumpy TF would just get a bit *bumpier* with one loose damper ;) <-- (Not seriuos meaned)

just looked at my copy of the recall and the torque setting is 90nm

Do take it to a dealer ! My car, a 2002 135 TF was the first to have a suspension collapse due to the bolt having loosened and then fracturing- fortunately I was only doing 30mph at the time. MGR were very interested in the reasons why it happened and the dealer was terrific ( Edwards of Stratford ).

was the car badly damaged ?
did they give you a new one ?

to Pete' France.

No, the car was barely damaged at all, only a slight crinkling of the wing return edge where it collapsed onto the tyre. Instead of a repair, which would have been easy, the whole wing was replaced. I had the unlimited use of a new, top of the range Rover 25, while MGR examined my car and the replacement wing was fitted and my first service, due later this month, will be free. No complaints from this quarter!

>only a slight crinkling of the wing return edge where it collapsed onto the tyre

? funny.. no, not funny.

The bolt mentioned in the recall IMO can't cause such break down .. Am I wrong ?
