MG MGF Technical - The HUGE difference a splitter makes to an F

What a MASSIVE difference a simple splitter makes!
as you go beyond about 80 you can really feel the difference! Through the steering and the general poise of the car

It used to go light and vague, not giving you confidence about making corners at high speed.

Now it is totally and utterly different. You can feel the grip and extra weight at higher speeds. Such a huge difference.

Why oh why didnt MGR fit these things as standard?
Why didnt I fit one right from day 1? Deerrrr!
A 130mph blast 10 years ago scared the hell out of me as it was clear the car is bordeline stable at high speeds. With the car trying to take off.
I even read the MGF book and took special interest in the MIRA wind tunnel results about frontal lift and spoilers to allay the F's frontal lift problem

Such a difference. Everybody out there fit one ASAP. Dont discuss, dont argue just do it!

Neil

...better get busy this weekend then, I've had a KH pattern splitter sat in the garage since last november!!

mind you, i've got HGF to contend with first!

which splitter do you have Neil trophy or KH style?

Mike

Yeah, I have to agree . I fitted my trophy spoiler last year, and it was immediately noticeable.

Still not great at high speeds though, but then we are not supposed to drive at high speed ;)

Neil, since we chatted about this at Brooklands in 1998 (or was it 1999?) I am surprised it's taken you this long to get around to fitting one! ROFLMAO

Another member for the splitter club :o)

I've never been a great fan of splitters. I've always liked the looks of the F as it was originally intended and since getting my suspension well and truely sorted by Mr Satur I've been pretty pleased with the results at any speed. That is with the exception of high speed cornering with a bit of side wind. Anyway a few months ago someone that I know removed their KH Splitter in favour of a Trophy one and very kindly gave me the KH one for free (thanks very much Ian). I've now fitted it and I've got to say that it does make a difference. The car just feels so much more planted to the road. So, another convert to the KH Splitter. Oh, and I'm beginning to get used to the look of it as well.

At one time you were considering modifying the airdam underneath as an alternative to fitting a splitter. Did you ever take it any further?

I have the trophy splitter and i strongly recommend fitting a splitter to the F. It makes a very big improvement at motorway speeds.

You're right, I did. But then I fitted the KH and promptly put that little job on the back burner. However, since I've removed the splitter, it is an idea that I may revisit - but then, I may reduct the rad outlet through the bonnet, ala 200HPD... :o)
Rob Bell

Yeah Rob I never liked the look of splitters
but when we chatted with the handling boys at Advanced Solutions (?) it was clear that frontal lift was an issue

so I eventiually got around to fitting a KH version.

Mike Roberts go get the latest Landrover gaskets and shim when you do the HGF. Looks most like a permanent cure

Neil

Vehicle handling solution's Alan Phillips talk at MGF10 was very interesting - in fact, this is what is inspiring me of thinking to redirect the radiator air outlet through the bonnet. Just need to think things through to avoid an ugly hole in the bonnet...
Rob Bell

Hmm,just wonder if someone with PhotoShop knowledge could blend in a slanted radiator in the bonnet..
"Redirect the radiator outlet",IMO there isnīt much of a "radiator outlet" in original setup.Would be interesting to get verified what directions the hot air takes when feed thru the rad. Very restricted behind by the sparewheel etc.
My "Green Frog" benefits from 2 wings at each front side bolted to the same place as the ordinary splitter. Hav not tested full KH splitter, but those wings makes a lot of diff in handling at high speed.
Somehow the roads are not that narrow any more ;O)
Carl

Rob,

"thinking to redirect the radiator air outlet through the bonnet"

Techspeed fabricated a 'funnel' to direct air through the Rad for my F. As you know this was also a Cup Car mod, as much of the air hitting the front of an F disperses around the Rad rather than through it. The TF has a moulding attached to the bumper to do this, but they are hard to come by second-hand as they are sold with the bumpers. Also, I think they would still need some fettling to fit an F.

Carl,

"there isnīt much of a "radiator outlet"

I wonder what happens with the air I'm now forcing through the rad!

Dave, I was talking to Roy about that - I hadn't realised that they'd gone and done something about it! I want one! How much?

What I have in mind is rather more in line with VHS's TF sprint car. On the TF200HPD, MIRA managed to drop front lift to zero - and this was complemented by a bootlid Gurney flap (rear end lift zero). This is the approach I'd like to mimick as it will also have a minimal impact upon Gerry McGovern's original styling (which I am keen to preserve as much as possible).

Perhaps I should drop Gerry an email to see whether he'd have any suggestions? Probably 'leave it alone or else!' ;o)

Carl, I hadn't realised you had got 'whisker' spoilers fitted. Are there photos on Dieter's webpage?
Rob Bell

Rob,

>>Dave, I was talking to Roy about that - I hadn't realised that they'd gone and done something about it! I want one! How much?

You know how it works - it was just part of the overall bill! Gavin would tell you how much work went into it. Material is probably almost zip, so it's just how long he took.
Dave Livingstone

>Just need to think things through to avoid an ugly hole in the bonnet

yeah just copy the 200HPD

Neil

Ah ha! But Alan seeded the idea of a cunning way of being able to retain the spare wheel... so the outlet vent needs to be a bit further back than was the case for the 200HPD...

Dave - I'll ask about it at the next service then :o)
