MG MGF Technical - Ticking Engine hot and cold

My girlfriend bought a private sale 1997 1.8i 2 weeks ago with 42000 on clock

It had just had the headgasket done together with Cam Belt (got receipts) and when i test drove it it sounded fine but now it has a very annoying ticking hot and cold which is rev dependant

Apart from the ticking it drives fine - power seems normal and oil level and water etc are good

It sounds to me like a sticky tappet after searching your archives - i've tried some Wynns sticky lifter additive with no luck and yesterday I changed oil, did engine flush then put new MAgnatec 10/40 in but no better

I am going to speak to the garage that did the work for the previous owner as was only about 300 miles ago but wondered if anyone has any other ideas as to what it could be other than tappets??

Any help appreciated!

Thanks

Get a length of hosepipe and holding one end to you ear and wandering around the engine see if you can make out where it is coming from.

But it's probably a lifter. Often getting the car nice and hot and taking it for a long hard thrash is enough to loosen them up.

My "stuck lifter" turned out to be a loose exhaust manifold. - Worth checking.

Thanks - I will have a look tonight when she gets back from work - where is best place to check manifold (not had much chance to properly look at engine yet!) would it be easier to look from underneath or remove engine cover??

Cheers

remove engine cover and use the hosepipe to search for the noise, from above you can get at both manifolds, all over the cam cover, sensors and distributor.

It is also worth wandering down the cam belt cover, although you shouldn't be getting ticking from there, and if you do then stop immediatly.

thats the main thing i was scared of if its Cambelt related!

I want to get sorted quick as she loves her new toy apart from the ticking!

i'll have look tonight and let you know how i get on!

Cheers!

btw this forum looks very useful - i've been using similar for while for my 5 series but never found another one as helpful for other cars so thanks!
