MG MGF Technical - Tie -bar bush spacer

Can anyone help with a performance comparison between the bush spacer and polyurethane bushes on the tie-bar only.
We've got one car with polys on and it's a big improvement but cost is an issue for the second car.
How close will the performance be?

How are you wanting to compare 'performance' Ken?

On the road, I would doubt that you'd be able to tell much difference between a car with a bush spacer fitted and a poly bush...

Road use at the moment until we think we can afford a grassy excursion or two. I want to get rid of the turn in lurch(normal it seems) and the feeling of a floating rear on high speed long bends, I don't like it. The car with poly bushes inspires a lot of confidence in fast bends and absolutely zero lurch.
Trouble is it's a fair amount of work to just 'try' the spacers.
What do you think?
Ken Waring

I've had the spacers fitted for years, and I would have to say that they work extremely well.

I took pictures a while back of three cars fitted with the standard bush, bush plus spacer or PU bush replacement - http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/suspension/suspension_images/upgrading_bushes.htm

These cars are raised off the ground, so the wheels are at full jounce.

The standard bush shows clear evidence of deformation - as can be seen by the uneven gap in the bush.

But compare the bush plus spacer and the PU bush replacement - there's hardly any difference.

I would say that, on the road therefore, you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference between a PU or a spacer in a standard bush.

At 10/10ths I am sure there are differences - but frankly, no-one drives at 10/10ths on the road! :o)

Ken,

i fitted the compliance washers to my car last weekend, and whilst i am not able to offer an opinion on the performance characteristics of a car fitted with PU bushes, i can categorically say that with compliance washers fitted the "turn in lurch and high speed floatiness" have completely disappeared, and i now feel that i have the car that i handed the cheque over for...

if it's any use to you i posted a thread on the general board a couple of days ago, and in response to a request from Sam Murray posted fitting instructions.

hope this helps

Mike

Excellent. Many thanks Mike and Rob. I can safely go the least cost route.
