MG MGF Technical - Tink tink noise from MG-F

Hi All,

I have a 99 MG-F 1.8i. Sensational car. Recently had the head gasket replaced (under warranty - phew) and things have been running smooth.

That is, until this week. I've been noticing a kind of "tink tink" noise from the rear of the car. It aligns perfectly with the revs of the car - so engine related.

My mechanic said it could be related to the timing belt - which is due to be replaced on Monday (done 82,000 km).

I'm kinda nervous about what it's going to be. I have stopped driving te car until it's looked at. I want to appear half intelligent when I speak with the mechanic about it.

Anyone have any advice on what it could be and how bad it might be ?

Not sure what this could be Sonny. Where in the engine is the noise eminating? Trying to track it down to the top/ bottom/ side of the engine could provide useful clues as to what is going on.

A shot in the dark: is the noise 'tappety' - and if so, what is the oil level? The hydraulic tappets get noisy as the oil level drops.

Start asking why he hasn't replaced the timing belt when he fixed the HGF.

What kind of HGF was it ? Water to the outside or mixing water and oil ?
Erik

Erik, simple answer here, HGF under warranty= 0 charge to customer.cambelt is chargeable,

It was the water and oil mixing. I wasn't given the option of having the cambelt replaced - nor did I know it needed to be done.

THe HGF was around 65k kms - which is about normal from what I can understand. I'm also lead to believe that the cambelt doesn't need replacing until 60k miles which is about 100k kms.

Could my problem stem from someone not doing their job right when doing the HGF repair ?

Cam belt for the *F* should be changed every 60,000 miles or five years which ever comes the sooner.
