MG MGF Technical - Toyo Tyres

Hi all,

My one just passed the MOT (Phew!) but the mechanic recommended I replace the rear tyres asap.

Ive heard Toyo's are the best option. Does anyone know somewhere you can pick them up on the cheap?

Cheers guys,

Nick

Nick,

I've ordered two sets of Toyo's from http://www.mytyres.co.uk/ but take a note of the previous thread from Ted about this... (about 3-4 down in General)

Note that I had mine delivered straight to my main MGR dealer or local tyre place and then they fitted and balanced them for £10 per wheel. This is as opposed to using mytyres recommended fitters some of which, according to Teds post, don't actually exist anymore and your tyres may end up gone!

Cheers

Chris.

Nick,I can echo Chris's words.

My T1-R's came from the same place, £43.70 I think each, I bought four but price is the same for a pair, this includes vat and delivery. I had them sent to my house.

Also just bought two Michelins for the wife's car, same good service.

This 520bhp ZT finished the 24 hour race at Silverstone last weekend. It's run by the Dreadnought Garage in Callander and raced on road legal Toyo Proxes the whole race (car sponsored by Toyo)while everyone else was using racing tyres. I'd say that if these tyres can give racing performance and stand up to the punishment they can't be that bad.

David,
I haven't been able to get the car out of hand since fitting these, people tell me I'm not trying hard enough, maybe not, but wet or dry they've never let me down. I think if these tyres let go maybe it could be the driver not the car.

Hi there i have just put toyo's the back of my car paid £53 each including fitting and they are the best i have used evey the grip is unbelivebal and they look grate. When i got these ones i was told that they are the new model and will last longer than the old ones but still hold the road just as well. I now toyo do not last as long as most but it is worth is for that fact that do not loss grip.

I've had Toyo Proxes and I've found them good, but the GY F1's (a set of GSD2, then GSD3 on the front only) I got afterwards were even better IMO

I noticed that you are an Essex lad.

If you don't want the e-route for tyres try either Elite Tyres at Rainham which are very competitive and lots of choice
OR
Jet tyres at Canvey which are as equally competitive but less choice.

Have T1-R's on all wheels and find them to be excellent. The rears are wearing faster than the fronts by at least 2 to 1 but as well as averaging 16000km in 9months as an every day car the F has done sprints, hillclimbs and motorkhana's on tarmac and grass.

Hi guys,

can anyone tell me the difference between Toyo T1-R's and T1-S's?

Any advice on the best ones to get?

Cheers!
Nick D

The T1-R’s have a slightly harder compound and Toyo say they should last longer (this seems to be the case) and the tread Patten has been altered slightly for better performance in the wet.

I just tried to buy a set of Toyo T1Rs here in Melbourne for my 1997 VVC but told they are not available. Have been offered a set of Pirelli P6000 as I have on my SAAB 900s,not sure if these would be a good thing on an F,anyone got a comment or experience with these tyres on an F?

Apppreciate any help you can give, its a big investment for an old fart like me.
Alan Mackew

P7000 are better, although P6000s have been fairly well rated in the past Alan: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/tyres/index.htm

I am surprised that the Toyo T1R is not available as this is a new(ish) range that will replace the T1S.

As I said else where the T1R is slightly firmer than the old Bridgestone SO2 and gives a slightly harder ride BUT of course I am comparing brand new T1Rs with old and worn SO2s so only time will tell if there is a real difference.

So far the tyres have behaved extremely well but until I get a chance to try them out in anger it is difficult to say how good or bad they are compared to previous excellent SO2s.

One thing that I have noticed is they appear to generate less road noise.

Do Toyos not call the Proxes something else "down under"? I'm sure someone from Australia was on a while ago asking about a Toyo tyre that nobody here had ever heard of.

I have told Alan where I purchased mine from at the begining of the year and I know of someone who purchased a set for an MR2 just 10 days ago. Ithink Alan's tyre place is pushing what he has in stock!.

£200 all round for T1-S all round, 195x50 front and 205x50 rear. Grip is good but will have to be to beat the Avon ZV3 that were on previously. Only replaced the front due to MOT saying front left was a fail due to uneven wear and forced to change 4 tyres when budgeting for 2.
Nkosi_Ecosse

Hmm, thats interesting, I was also considering a set of Avons...

Do you know if they are suited to the F? Are ZV3's Avons best offering?
