MG MGF Technical - Trophy Spoiler on standard F

Gents. Have just fitted a Trophy front splitter to my 96 VVC and have been amazed by the improvement in stability at speed. It now goes like its on rails. Far better than the old Krafthaus splitter I had. I read somewhere that Stevens designed the Trophy splitter and spoiler to significantly improve high speed stability and reduce drag. If I get a Trophy spoiler too will this provide an equivalent boost to stability as the splitter or was the spoiler more for show? I have heard that it adds practically nothing as its too small.
Marc H

Have fitted both front and rear Trophy spoilers to my F...

Like you, I have to say front end stabily at speed is greatly improved, as for the rear the only real difference I have noticed is the BUMP on my head!!!!!.......

The extra weight of the spoiler means the boot lid springs struggle to hold the lid up!,..... and it allways drops when my head is stuck in the boot!! .....Ouch!!..... :o)
Mark.L

I believe the Drag Coefficient (CD)drops from 0.37 (standard F) to 0.35 (Trophy) - both spoilers fitted. This is even better than the TF's CD of 0.36. The possibility exists that overall results may be different when OE (MGR) items are fitted compared to Trophy 'style' non OE alternatives. Also TBH I am not sure how much the lowered suspension of the Trophy plays in the general aerodynamics of the equation.

Apart from that, IMHO from an aesthetics point of view they suit the car perfectly - good choice guys :)

The guys from Vehicle Handling Solutions, who are effectively the team that developed the Trophy, were surprised at how few of the track-day regulars had fitted the Trophy rear spoiler. I can't recall the figures they mentioned, but it seems there is a significant benefit.
Mike Hankin

I don't like spoilers - I think that they're aptly named.

What I would be interested in though is a subtle bootlid extension. Mike Satur used to do these, and there is one on the HPD200.

I think Brown & Gammons do something along the lines of whats more close to whats required, But even thats a little larger than neccessary. It's on there site called a bootlid spoiler.

The guys from vehicle Handling seemed to think a small upturned lip of around an inch would be ideal

Ref: HPD200 rear " Gurney" flap. put me down for one as well.

Mike, Malcolm, if you're listening, there could be a market for an effective lip spoiler if you're up for producing one! :o)
Rob Bell

To be pedantic - I think the term spoiler is incorrect anyway - airfoil should really be used. In aviation terms spoilers are in fact movable control surfaces usually fitted to the upper surfaces of wings that 'spoil' the airflow causing an increase drag to reduce airspeed and lift.

Like em or not when properly designed and fitted they do work.
Steve P

HPD200: Wonder if the flap was strictly a one off, i.e. made on the car, or if a mould was made?, which could?? still exist somewhere. Anybody on here got contact with the people involved with the HPD200?
roy bridge

Someone on another forum has been in contact with MIRA regarding the 200HPD bonnet - and apparently, there is a possibility of this being reproduced. If the bonnet can be done, then so too could the side scoops - and more importantly for us - the boot lid Gurney flap (although we'll need a TF boot lid one presumes)
Rob Bell

Rob, do you have any images of the HPD200 as I have no idea what youre talking about!? Thanks! ps Is your objection to the Trophy spoiler aesthtetic or on the basis it doesnt work? Or both!?

quite nice...

And the bonnet, is it like this one ?

(is this home made ?)

Marc, see http://www.mgcars.org.uk/carclub/mgfregister/200HPD/index.

Also, see the montage of 200HPD press release images here: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/carclub/mgfregister/news/News/TF_200HPD.jpg

The rear spoiler is very subtle, and is said to work extremely well.

I also like the fact that the front doesn't have a splitter - the front aerodynamics being improved by better management of the airflow through the radiator (now bleeding through the bonnet, rather than under the car - rather similar to the Elise in fact).

I would potentially be very interested in implimenting this design on my MGF...
Rob Bell

I would definitely be interested in the bonnet if anyone puts it into production!
Kris

Last I heard of this was on another forum: http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=97002

I've posted to ask for an update.
Rob Bell

Ah ha! I hadnt picked up on the bodywork differences when I saw the pictures of the hybrid car when they first appeared. I like the boot - very subtle, would definately like one of those, especially if they did it in carbon fibre or GRP. Ditto the bonnet and the scoops. Actually Rob, as the Hybrid car was a one off these mods would put us into the "specials" class wouldn't they? That wouldnt be a problem with the Trophy spoiler. Do you think that the Trophy spoiler works?
m hanson

When launched, the Trophy spoiler was said to be part of an aerodynamic package that Peter Stevens designed for the TF - and therefore is said to drop the MGF's Cd.

However, I am not sure how effective it is: Alan Phillips, I seem to recall, mentioned that the pitch of the spoiler is wrong, and probably needs to be mounted on a plinth to alter the angle of attack. I shall try and find out more.

Regarding all the other standard rear spoilers - none work.

Of the lot, the Trophy is best.

I know of someone who might be interested in selling theirs - I'll ask for you Mark.

Regarding specials - well, hurrumph - I am already into the realms of RGM, so why not go the whole hog?
Rob Bell

Rob , if you know one for sale let me know. Prefer a brg one for obvious reasons...
m hanson

Mark,

If you are going to fit one, don't forget the strengthening brackets which fit underneath the bootlid!

I'll have a look on the EPC for the part numbers and put them on here.
Kris

Hmmm, can't seem to find them on there?

Is it possible that all F's have them already fitted?
Kris

Fabrice
The bonnet vents on the car in Frappe are for a S2000 from CHD Tuning and suit the F/TF better than the Mira version IMO. Also being a little further back means better airflow than the Mira version too.
Blue Pocket Rocket

Thanks BPR !

"Front Bonnet air intake" : € 186 + tax

Not sure about the airflow though, if no other mod is made. IMO, there is no flow since the radiator is not "in connection" with the area under the bonnet ?

Here's a link to the trophy boot lid internal brackets

That's the ones! :)

Thanks Joe.

Marc, I'll let you know - it may be easiest to perform a complete bootlid swap. :o)
Rob Bell

blimey - Im not up to doing any bracket welding so a complete boot lid swap may be necessary. Anyone got one in brg...(or white)
m hanson

Sorry, looks as though the chap who I had in mind has now changed his mind and is now going to keep the spoiler. It was flame red anyway! LOL
