MG MGF Technical - Trophy std. exhaust on VVC98?
Dear enthusiasts, Is there a possibility to put on a Trophy std. exhaust on a VVC 98? Is there a different between the two standards? what is the inlet manifold? |

Hi Phil, >Is there a possibility to put on a Trophy std. exhaust on a VVC 98? No, it doesn't firt >Is there a different between the two standards? Yes, from Tropy onwards the EDC3 gotintroduced with different ECU and an additional Lambda sensor behind the catalyst. That's why the connection flange got changed and the catalyste got an additional curve. (Former at the exhaust) >what is the inlet manifold? the big black coloured aluminum plenum on the inlet side of the head. Throttle body with accelerator cable attached on the left. HTH Dieter http://www.mgfcar.de

Hmmm, well Dieter is correct in that the Trophy (and any MY2000 F) exhaust is different to the standard one. However, the difference is the connection pipe to the catalyst (its a 45 degree bend, rather than the old style 90 degree one). This means that you can fit one if you replace the cat with a MY2000 one or have a short 45 dgree pipe section made up to fill the gap. Not quite sure why you would want to go to this trouble though as there are a number of off the shelf aftermarket systems that will be a lot easier to fit (and more 'charaterful' too!) :-) Inlet plenum: Open boot lid, look through grille, inlet plenum is the part with VVC embossed on it. It is a chamber that distributes the incoming air evenly between the 4 cylinders. HTH SF

From my information the Trophy exhaust will fit all models up to 2000MY cars that have a post cat sensor, sorry SF/Dieter :-( mIKE.
mike
Oops, that should say, does NOT have a post cat sensor. All the Trophy exhausts were dealer fitted after delivery, some not as well as they should have been,eh Chris? ;-) Mike.
mike
Yep, agree in principals. But he asked for fitting it to a VVC98. :) VIN between WD026241 up to 1D501000 (approximate) Post cat sensor is since VIN 1D522572 (EDC3) Is it ? Anyway, a nice Mike Satur Daytona exhaust would be much better in any way, even if other suppliers sell also 'any! exhausts .. ;) :-P Dieter

Dieter, Trophy was an exception to this 'vin number rule'AFAIK We agree about Daytona;-) Mike.

<<All the Trophy exhausts were dealer fitted after delivery, some not as well as they should have been,eh Chris? ;-)>> Absolutely! My exhaust fitment is an highly accurate example of some the "workmanship" than can emmanate from MGR dealers. The attempt to correct it is even more of an exercise in what can be done with a rusty bolt, all under warranty, of course. If it wasn't for the fact that I don't want to risk that particluar set of "mechanics" HA HA, touching the car again, I would be getting very "cross" with them. Shame, as they used to have a really excellent guy. I'll just settle for a well fitted Daytona!

>Trophy was an exception to this 'vin number rule'AFAIK With you. Looked up the 'records' and found a must silly one here some weeks ago. 2D5312xx (pre-registered car from a dealer) http://www.mgfcar.de/2002.fst/2002fstDCP_0698.jpg It had a plastic throttle body... whyever. http://www.mgfcar.de/2002.fst/2002fstDCP_0702.jpg Anyway, I need not understand everything ;) Unfortunately there were only a few guys who sent specific data regarding TROPHY to http://www.mgfcar.de/vin/index.htm :( Dieter
Dieter Koennecke
<It had a plastic throttle body... whyever.> probably went AWOL from the production line;-) LOL mike.

ROFL or they had just a sad day and decided to use the black coloured then.

Anyone know how many Trophy 160's were made?
Blue Pocket Rocket
2000 VIN range app. between 528xxx to 531xxx Made not in one sequence but mixed with standard MGF. I think they all have the head gasket with steel dowels installed.

Regarding the Trophy exhaust confusion, then both Mike and Dieter are correct! The answer is that the Trophy was initially launched as a limited-type approval special in the UK only to circumvent the newly introduced EDC3 emissions and diagnostics requirements in the EEC that came into effect in 2001. The model's success lead to the car being further developed and latterly EDC3 compliant to enable sale to other EU markets. Therefore all EU Trophy models have the post 2001 cat and backbox pattern. The early UK cars have the pre-2001 exhaust back box and cat pattern. At some point (presumably when the production exceeded the 1000 vehicles specified as a 'special', UK cars came off the production line ECD3 compliant, and thus with the new exhaust pattern. I have no information as to when, in the VIN lineage this change occured. Perhaps UK Trophy owners can check which exhaust system they have fitted?

Hi Rob, Any ideas about the plastic throttle body at the german MGF Trophy ? :) >It had a plastic throttle body... whyever. >http://www.mgfcar.de/2002.fst/2002fstDCP_0702.jpg
Dieter Koennecke
Well, I haven't an explanation for that Dieter - unless all euroland 160s are fitted with plastic TBs??? Might be worth checking - and may have formed a part of the package of measures introduced to make the car ECD3 compliant before a more comprehensive raft of changes was introduced for the TF160. If all euroland MGF160s are fitted with plastic TBs, then it is also possible that they are not as powerful as their UK brethern or as their badge would suggest... Worth a little more investigation perhaps...

My chassis number is 530384 originally registered July last year and has the pre 2001 exhaust.

> Worth a little more investigation perhaps... :) good idea. The only EC one I know is in Luxembourg. VIN 531139. I'll ask Ton M. http://www.mgfcar.de/Treffen/dk_DCP_6602.jpg Dear 'Blue Pocket Rocket', can you please ad whether the prefix for the make/type year is at yours 1D ? Or 2D ? I bet it's 1D530384 Thank you Dieter
Dieter Koennecke
Hi Dieter, Your right it's 1D!! The significance is?? BPR
