MG MGF Technical - Tweeter wires - AWOL

Hi All,

I recently upgraded my MY2000 '99 MGF to have a TF interior including the door cards.

Long story but my F did have a pre MY2000 interior in it when I bought it (not sure why) so my old door cards had no tweeters... obviously the new ones do as they're out of an 04 TF but.... when I put the door cards on there were no wires in the door to plug into the tweeter... can't even find them hidden away...

So the question is, can I just patch wires into the main speaker wire and run them off to the tweeter? Now, I did do A'Level physics but that was a few years back! :-)

Cheers

Chris.

Hi Chris,

I suspect that the tweeters will just use a capacitor as a crossover - if they're on your new tweeters you should just be able to splice the wiring in to the cabling for the main door speakers.

Tim,

"capacitor", "crossover"... yeah I think I remember those things from my school days...

Ok, I'll give it a bash... I suspect I can't do any harm.. upgrading the stereo soon anyhow just in case I blow it up...

Cheers...

Cheers Geoff... off home to explode my car :-)

Anybody know what kind of connector I need for the end of the wires to attach to the tweeter... instead of me whipping the door card off... didn't have time last night...

Cheers

The tweeters in the TF door cards already have the tweeters built in, so no need to worry there. Just wire + to + and - to -.

Regarding the connector - it's a special one that you will not find in Halfrauds. Might be worth contacting a specialist autobreaker to see if they'll supply the loom extensions (chances are that they won't on account that they'll want to sell the whole door complete - but worth asking anyway).

You may be able to put something together using small spade connectors though - these are available from your local motor accessory store. I don't know what size off hand, so measure them up (or take the tweeters with you) before buying.

I’ve just done this modification to my car. There are 3 main problems

1. Which is the positive speaker wire and which is the negative.
Drivers side (orange/pink) positive (orange/black) negative
Passenger side (yellow/pink) positive (yellow/black) negative

2. The connectors for the tweeters are part of the cars wiring loom and so cannot be purchased from rover as a separate item you have to buy the whole wiring loom. The best place to get them would me a specialist breaker like the MGF centre or Midland MGF. The connector itself is a T shape and the top of the T is the positive connection

3. The existing speaker wires are in side the door (connected to the main speaker in the door) and you have to bring the tweeter wire through the door to the door card. The best method is to drill the in side of the door and fit a 10mm grommet and feed the tweeter wire through it.

Russell, if memory serves correctly, on the MY2000 and TF, the tweeter cable merely pearces through the plastic membrane, without any need for extra holes.

When I installed my tweeters (Infinti components, so they are not the same as you've used), I routed the wire towards the front of the door, through an existing hole. Hopefully I have some pictures - I'll have a look...
