MG MGF Technical - Tyre Type

Can anyone tell me the difference between Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D2 and GS-D3?
DB Ferris

These 2 links will show the visual differences quite well.

Other than looks it is manufacturer claims - better compound, better tread stability, better grip, better life, better steering, better wet weather etc etc.

Try googling for 'goodyear f1 tyres gs' selecting 'all of these words'. As the D2 is on the way out you may not too much upto date info.

I've used D2s but then changed to TOYO T1-S on the F. Have just fitted a full set of T1-S to the TF had had a fantastic few days in Scotland on the Highlander.

There are a couple of people who come on here who work for tyre manufacturers - if they appear you may get the full techie differences.

IMO, (as an ex Pirelli employee), the other difference between the d2 and the d3 is that the mould cost and cost per cover in manufacturing terms for the d3 is significantly cheaper than the d2 due to the simplified design.

Hum, following the link to Rob's site, he basically warns against D3s on the F/TF. Mmm, must go check my own, pretty sure they're D2s...

Fascinating reading, Rob, btw.

Thanks Colin - it is a comment generated following a considerable amount of bad press the tyres received both here and on other internet forums. For what it is worth, I have GS-D3s all round on my F, and find that the tyre is certainly superior to the earlier GS-D2s, probably thanks to the significantly stiffer sidewalls used on the newer tyre.

My advice is to buy with your eyes open - the 'D3 is an excellent tyre, it does extremely well in independent tyre tests, looks good and seems to last reasonably well.

I'd also point out that many new tyres cause some handling 'curiousities' until they bed in - which can take some hundreds of miles depending on the type of driving you do.

Hope that helps?

Rob, off-topic a bit, but did you ever get the second 'installment' of my ARB bush saga?

Gonna have a crack at the rear bushes this weekend, weather permitting. Also, see just how *bad* the downpipe flexi and/or cat have gotten ;-( Oh, and think to myself (again, again, again) that I should call Mike S and order the ali coolant pipes.

Take it easy,

Thanks Colin, I did - I just haven't had time recently to update the site! I was looking at it yesterday, so if I get time at the weekend, I should be able to get the second instalment on line then :o)
