MG MGF Technical - Tyres again

I have very sever wear to the inside edge of both front tyres. I have had the tracking done last week but now need to find replacements.

I currently have Eagle Ventura 195 on front and Eagle Touring 205 NCT at rear. Not knowing anything about tyres the only thing I have noticed is the Ventura come up higher on the rim and so protects the edge a bit.

Any advise to whether mixing tyre spec and even brands form front to rear is acceptable. And what would be a good cost effective replacement.

The garages just quote NCT 3's

Lots in the archives, but this should get you going

Local garage quoting £130 all in for two Goodyear F1.

Bridgestone 720 and NCT 5 same price.
I think I will go with the F1 however as at least I will have same manufacturer on all wheels if not the same spec (rears are NCT 3)

Does this sound a reasonable price?
Timothy

Timothy, I'm sure that others will agree with me - don't do it!

Putting the F1s on the front whilst you still have NTC3s on the rear is a recipe for disaster. Change all 4 wheels to F1s - you won't regret it.

I must repeat Ralph's caveat - do NOT put F1 on front with NCT3 (worn) on the back.

NCT3 no longer available.

Good reports of the Bridgestone if fitted as a set.

Also (personal experience of these) TOYO T1-S or T1-R when fitted as a full set. Shop around for TOYO at 50%-60% cost of F1.

Whatever you fit, do take care running the tyres in for 300-500 miles before hanging the backend out.

Do come back and let us know which way you go.

Completely agree with what Ralph and John say. Replace your tyres as a set. My "budget" performance tyres of choice would be either the Bridgestone RE720 or the Toyo T-1S/ T-1R (the latter are the latest version of the Proxes). As your dealer has the RE720, then perhaps go for these.

As regard to price, it pays to shop around as much as possible: prices vary by as much as 60% between the worst and best: Micheldever near Andover are my usual "gold standard" for tyre prices.

Hope this helps

Before reading your comments below I went ahead and got two new F1's for the front. £124 including vat, balancing, valves and 4 wheel Hunter tracking which I thought was quite good.

I am now worried by your comments but can't stretch to replacing perfectly good rear tyres quite yet.

I was thinking of having a look at trading in for a TF but so fare this week I have needed to buy a new battery, have the hydragas and suspension sorted and now the tyres.
Timothy

If you feel that your car is handling fine, then okay, just be careful. Bear in mind that the rear end may come out before the rear does when you are cornering spiritedly.

Of course, if you're trading the car in, then there really isn't any point in investing any more money into the car: the dealer won't give you any value on the tyres you've got on the car.

Good luck, and drive safe!

Didn't the tyre dealer make any attempt to deter you ?
This is a potentially disastrous combination (the 'better' tyres should aways be on the rear), and the tyre shop should have refused to fit these tyres - IMO.

As Rob says though, it it works then OK.
Good luck on the trade-in (from your other thread)
Your car's about the same age / mileage as mine, so I'll follow that thread with interest.
