MG MGF Technical - Tyres for my MGF VVC

I've just purchased a 2001 MGF VVC and noticed the handling seems very skittish and at times dangerous. I have got GY D3's on the back (newish!!) amd GY D2's on the front (1/2 worn). But apart from that love the car!! I have heard that GY or MG don't recommend the GY D3s for the MGF and believe this is causing the instability problems made worse by the fact that the car has D2's on the front. Has anybody else had this problem? And, it is best for me to replace the backs with new D2's or replace all four with an alternative on the basis D2's are now quite hard to get hold of. Would anybody recomend the Toyo T1r's. Thanks

This might be the reason, but...
At first check the ride height and the conditions of the suspension ball joints and the wheel bearings. Track rod ends also.

However, changing the wheels once for a trial from front to rear doesn't hurt.
May be useful to find out whether the rear or the front suspension causes the wobbly steering problem.
I'd bet it's the rear.

John,Toyo T1 R's I have used them for road and track and love them compared to Goodyears. Look through the archives and you will find nothing but good reports. Glad you have joined us and with spring and summer just around the corner you should have a ball.

Thanks Guys, really looking foward to getting that roof down!! In the meantime, I will change the front wheels to the back and see if that improves the handling. If not, how about changing the 2 worn GY D2's for Dc3's? At least all the tyres will be the same then.

Just to support what Andrew said, I followed his advice and fitted Toyo T1 Rs at my last change and they are very good with a good ride quality and exellent adhesion (I had to fit the same size front and rear as the smaller section tyres normally fitted on the front were not available at the time in Oz). My car is used only as a general drive car but Andrew is a well known competator in MG car club events.

Thanks for all your help guys. I have changed the wheeels over from front to back and it does feel much better. Checked out suspension, wheel bearing and everything looks and feels sound. However, I am going to take Andrew's advise and go for Toya T1R's all round just to give me peace of mind as my Wife uses this car mostly. As I said, love the car and so looking foward to some sun after our long dreary Winter.

John, the BBS tyre survey shows the results of the winners and loosers in terms of tyre performace: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/tyres/index.htm

There is also a warning contained here regarding mixing GS-D3s with the earlier tyres. I've been using GS-D3s for some time now without problem - although I tend to replace all four tyres at the same time :o)
