MG MGF Technical - Tyres for my TF

After 15k, my rear tyres on my TF160 need replacing (Goodyear Eagle F1 215/40 16 GSD2)

I have been ringing around for prices and get different information from each supplier.

My understanding is that GSD3 has replaced the GSD2 (although you can still get GSD2). I have found Goodyear Eagle F1 215/40 ZR16 GSD3 for £80.00 fitted/balanced incl VAT.

Another garage quoted me £110.00 but told me his are the GSD3 W rated tyre which is better than the ZR rated tyre for £80.00. I checked the Goodyear website, but cannot see two types of GSD3. Are there two types of GSD3 tyres ?

Thanks
Steve

not types but speed ratings. see

Steve be careful, my understanding from Goodyear direct is that GSD2 are in production at present and they told me not to put GSD3 onto the TF160 as they are a completely different tyre. I am in the same situation need to replace the rear tyres, local tyre company is getting some GSD2 in for me. It appears the tyre dealers have misunderstood a memo from Goodyear and think the GSD3 is a replacement. MG Rover are supplied with GSD2 for new stock.

Not sure what to do -- My local tyre company has ordered some GSD3 in for me and I was hoping to get them fitted at the weekend. I think I call him tomorrow and see if he can change them for GSD2's

Same here as on some of the other threads GSD3 "seem" to be OK after they have bedded in after 400 miles, but I think I would rather stick with GSD2 as per production as I am not sure whether it would affect the 3yr warranty should there be a problem. I am still waiting for a local tyre company in Leicester to get the GSD3 but only have about another 600 - 800 miles on the rear tyres!!!

Have GSD3's fitted on the back of my Trophy. They need at least 300 miles to bed in but they are absolutely fine now. Better than the D2's.

Hi Blue Pocket Rocket - In what way are the D3's better?

They certainly have more grip but will be able to tell you more after the CCC Action Day at Castle Coombe at the end of this month! I have no hesitation in recommending them. By the way my suspension has been upgraded at Tech-speed and they set the tyre pressures at 28psi all round (according to the handbook the Trophy should have 24 front and 36 rear and I think the TF is the same). Might be worth experimenting on your TF and use 28 psi as a starting point.

just got a set of s/h 16s for the Purple Peril with only 2 good GSD2s. Bracknell Tyres - previously recommended by several others - told me that these are now out of stock and cannot be ordered. However they sold me a pair of 215/40x16 GSD3s for.....wait for it ....................£64.57 each fully fitted.
I almost bit his hand off :-)

Try taking a look at www.mytyres.net, that have a set of F1's for about £60 I think, a hell of a lot cheeper that Kwik-Fit, ATS. etc....
Steve G

Steve, mytyres.net are not cheap for 16s - they are quoting 76.90 for GSD2s and 77.90 for GSD3's, then of course you have the hassle of getting them fitted somewhere.
David

Thanks for your comments, there seems to be some mixed feeling about GSD3s.
I had some new tyres fitted -- 2 x Goodyear Eagle F1 215/40 ZR16 GSD3 on the rear for £160. I have only done about 50 miles on them, but I am fairly pleased with them. I have lowered the tyre pressures. I was running at 34, and dropped it to 32 (I thought down to 28 was too big a jump in one go).
BTW dealer was Elite Motorist Centre in Sandy,Beds. They were a recomended fitter on the mytyres.net website.
Thanks for your help

Put the 215/40x16s on Jackie's F yesterday - GSD2s a bit less than halfworn on the front, new GSD3s on the back, 28 psi all round. Discovered on a test drive what some of you are talking about - it darts all over the place at 70 plus on surface and camber changes, nothing I couldn't catch but not nice at all. I suppose I'll see how it is after 300 miles, and if no better start experimenting with pressures. (BTW it has lowering knuckles and poly bushes, and was very stable on 195x15 SO2s.)

David,
I am not seeing any of the problems you describe. I have the opportunity to drive at speed down some B Roads on the way to work/home. There are a fair number of bumps/cambers and I find the car handles the same as it did on GSD2. On mid speed cornering, it definitely handles better (although this could just be having a new set of tyres).
Only tried it in the dry, not driven on GSD3s in the wet yet !!!
If you have any luck with tyre pressures, please post them.
