MG MGF Technical - Understeer

I was traveling along at approx. 80km/h on a sweeping corner whilst changing up a gear and increasing my speed up to about 90Km/h. It felt like the front of the car lifted and the front became very light and it felt like the front was floating. Is this normal? The road was dry, I have new front tyres and no other problems with the car that I know of.

What tyres are you running, Grant?

Is your tracking set to the "MGR toe out" setting, or the "BBS toe in"? The "MGR" setting tends to make the car drive more like a front wheel drive, and hence tends towards understear whereas the BBS setting makes more for oversteer when pushed.

Might also be worth checking the lower ball joints and track rod ends for wear?

Surely after 22,000 Kms there shouldn't be that much wear on ball joints and track rod ends? As far as I know my F is set to the factory standard "MGR toe out". As for tyres Im running Goodyear NCT3s. I am about to upgrade them to 16" F1s.

Maybe new 4 wheel alignment after new tyres might fix the problem?

My F is as sure footed as... a cat!

And was it windy that day?
Fitting a KH splitter makes a big difference over 80km/h.

Hi,
Braking or gearshifting should be made well before entering any curve at speed. Otherwise a nasty load-change will happend and the car will be behaving very odd. The most typical one is a Porsche driver comming into a tight corner and in fear lifting off the accelerator. A nice 360 (or several!) usually follows... As said, better tyres than the NCT3 as well as the "reversed" front and rear tracking + splitter does help. You said nothing about the current ride height. Freelander mode ? Proper lowering with knuckles helps a lot. All small things together makes the "F" a much more enjoyable and safer car !
I will never forget my first track day with a standard "F" in -97 ! It was VERY scary .
