MG MGF Technical - uneven tyre wear

Hi all
I have just been reading about A T Devine's problems and have excactly the same thing.
I had the front wheels tracked and adjusted to what they said was now the correct settings? problem is that after a month the front tyres are now on the thread!!!
I took the car to a different independent place for new front tyres this w/end and asked for their opinion on the tracking which they checked and said the camber was WAY out, but no adjustment just new suspension mate HELP !!!so what next??? ebay? mx5??

My 2000F currently has the same problem. Having looked through the archives, I decided to book it into the MGOC workshop in Cambridge for 4 new Yokohamas, 4 wheel laser alignment and a pump up of the gas shocks. That should cure it!

There is absolutely no call for new suspension!!!

Camber can be somewhat off the manufacturer's standard settings - but this is rarely, in isolation, the cause of the premature front tyre wear that many owners report. The problem is nearly always toe-angles.

Before going any further, you need to measure the ride height of your car. This is done using a tape measure between the wheel centre and the wheel arch lip vertically above. The manufacturer's setting is 368mmą10mm. If yours is signficantly less than this (i.e. less than 350mm), then you need to get your suspension pumped up.

If you've got tyre wear with correct toe-angle settings (0 degrees 10 minutes toe-OUT) and the ride height is correct, then you need to use a non-standard toe-angle setting on the front of the car. On the BBS, we've used either the MG TF setting of 0 degress (parallel) or 0 degrees 5 minutes toe-IN.

Well thanks mr Bell and all.
Rob, i measured what you sugested and it resulted in 310mm from hub to wheel arch So how much does it cost for a pump up and has it got to go to mgr dealer?
My local independent garage is a very good friend and has done most other jobs up until now.
Cheers and thanks again for all your help.

No problem!

310mm is certainly too low. Any independent mechanic who can service Metro suspension can service your MGF suspension as well: all that is needed is a hydragas pump. Cost is labour - about an hour - and materials - which will be a few hundred mls of hydragas fluid. Depending on who you get to do it, it'll cost around 40 quid.

One thing I'd advise is take a little care in setting your suspension height - as it is very easy to over do the ride height adjustment and end up with a car that looks like a Freelander.

The method I have used on many cases is not as laid out in the official workshop manual, but it works and gives good results - the so called 'rule of thirds' - see here for more detail: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/DIY/suspension/howto_lower.htm

Good luck
