MG MGF Technical - Unlocking distance

Every time that I unlock my F1.8 with the blipper I have to stand very close to the car to get any result. I have the blippers batteries changed to no effect. Is it any way to improve the receiver distance reception?
Many thanks.

The receiver aerial for the alarm remote is coiled up behind the footwell light in the passenger footwell. It is a yellow wire and if you straighten it out and point it towards the front of the car, this will improve the range of the blipper.

You can gain access to it by removing the panel that houses the footwell light.

Range can also be improved by holding the blipper against the fleshy part of your palm and pointing in the direction of the car when you press the blipper.

There is plenty on this in the archives.

Look in the archive search for Blipper range
and also take a look at

Mike,

BEWARE!

I spent hours trying to release the yellow wire from the loom without success. It was well and truly coiled up with the rest of the wiring right up under the dashboard.

I am contemplating cutting the wire before it enters the loom and adding a piece of insulated wire to make the entire thing 170mm long, then routing it up the centre console, wawy from the rest of the wiring.

I have found a quite simple solution is to hold the blipper at arms length, above my head...get some odd looks , but it seems to increase the range to about 10-15 feet.Try it and see, at least it costs nothing!

Push it into the fleshy part under your chin. Works well. Try it.

Mike,

As Sam says, on some models the yellow aerial wire can be taped quite securely into the wiring loom at the bottom of the access panel in the left hand footwell.

However, on mine the yellow wire was loose, and just coiled up at the bottom of the car.

It's worth a look to see if yours is free. I wrote the instructions below when I did mine.....

I read about this in the archive, so today I set myself the task of extending the range of my alarm 'blipper'. I've just finished.

This really is such an easy thing to do. It takes 5 minutes, and costs absolutely nothing.

All you need is a philips head screwdriver, and some tape.

In the passenger footwell (left hand footwell for those with left hand drive models), there is a triangular panel. Inset into this is the interior footwell light. Undo two screws to take off the panel. One is fairly visible one at the top, one is not so visible at the bottom.

After taking off the triangular panel, you'll see a yellow wire. This is the aerial for the alarm blipper. One end of the yellow wire isn't connected to anything, and the free end is covered over with black tape (be sure to leave this black tape on - I guess its there to prevent contact with any metal or other wires). The free end is taped down to some tubing near the bottom of the centre column.

Simply take this tape off, raise the yellow wire as high as you can, and use the scotch tape to fix it to something appropriate. Re-attach the triangular panel, and jobs a good 'un. You're blipper range should now be in excess of 10 metres.

I think the yeloow wire is hidden under the wire cover hose since approximately MY 2000?

Pictures from Dieter's site will help you...

Happy blipping :o)

I have a fantastic range when I'm in the office on the second floor and the car is in the car park. If I'm on the same level as the car reception is quite poor.

I have uncoiled the aerial yellow cable and the blipper activating distance has improved to about 10 meters away from the car. Many thanks indeed.

Mike,

The distance will also vary according to local interfence. The chin method also makes the distance better and a German chap, Dieter, on this BBS touches his blipper to the rim of his spectacles.

A good backup tip is to make sure you always carry your Key Access code in case your blipper won't work. If the blipper doesn't work then you are stranded without the code. Practice using it before you really need it!

I uncoiled my yellow wire and got about another meters range(much needed), I might try extending the yellow wire to see if I can get more, how did you get on with this Sam?

James,

I havn't got round to this. Too busy fitting chrome door lock pins.

However, DON'T TOUCH THE YELLOW - as they say in the bomb disposal business!

The 170mm length corresponds with the wavelength of the transmit frequency.

Altering this length with have a detremental effect - unless you make it 340mm long!!!!
