MG MGF Technical - ::update:: Remote Bonnet Release

Well, got hold of a couple of remote boot/bonnet release kits (from the states) for £35 all in (inc delivery) I'll check with supplier to see if he is happy to supply a lot of these to you folks and if so will post the details. The kits look pretty bullet proof one should be up the the job of releaseing the bonnet no prob.

Just need a little info from a wiring whizz (Will). the kit says to wire the live feed into the fuse box, but can I wire it to the live feed to the handbrake light switch to make it a 'switched' switch? It has and inline fuse so shouldn't add any undue load to the loop?

I'll keep you updated re the fitting on wednesday when I've had chance to play about.

Cheers

Phil

you need to put a relay in line, the current there is only enough to switch a small bulb - the soloniod will take a lot of current.

RU at silverstone?

Aaah, didn't think it would be that simple.

Can you advise what type of relay I will need and where I could get one from?

Yup, at Silverstone all 3 days. Will be on the F register stand on the Friday at 1pm, and again at other points during the weekend but I cannot remember the Rota off hand. Will be at BBQ on Sat night as well.

Tell me what you want it to do, but my guess is you want a standard Lucus relay, yellow box like the relays in the F. You can go to any scrappie or deserted car and pull one from the fusebox - or you can get from MGR or wait till friday and buy one from a stall.

Shall I bring some tools?

Simply a case of mount the button somewhere hidden (prob cubby box, or the bottom of the ashtray), then I have the two kits, one was to be for the boot, and one for the bonnet (sick of going into the boot to open the bonnet, particularly when the boot rack is fully loaded), not gonna have time to go to a dealer or scrappie so I'll have to get a couple at Silverstone.

Will, if you are willing to bring them, I am more than willing to let you use them.

Go to www.lsuk.co.uk to find your nearest depot to pick up a solenoid.

Do the kits use solinoids or electric motors Phil? The former have a higher current rating, but both sorts are likely to require the use of a relay. Other sources of relays include RS and Maplins - both of which have on-line shops.

Regarding switches, the Porsche Boxster has electric release switches for both the front and rear luggage compartments, and come complete with nice symbols to show which is which. Might be worth try to obtain a pair of these? :o)

Along with the rest of the car perhaps Rob:-)

Only if it is a 3.2 litre Boxster S Ted ;o)

Solenoids Rob, so defo need Relays. Will have a look at Maplins as I have an account with them. Hopefully can get them before Friday =D

Ted, I agree with you there.

They will be on sale in the Autojumble, why bother ordering?
Will Munns

Just thinking that I am certian to get them from Maplins whereas I might not find them at Silverstone.

Which do you think would be better out of these two? Wherever I get them from I need to know what to get rating wise.

The big one ;-)

More Power !!!!!

Seriously, soloniods take a good slug of current, so this is the first choice (30 amps of a normal lucus relay would be fine), and secondly spade connectors are easy and the first is PCB mount. Get some decent lengths of wire too (for the wire 10 Amps will be easily sufficent)
