MG MGF Technical - Urgent question on shock replacing...

Hi all,

Hopefully Mike Hankin will be around to answer this one as he's done Gaz shocks but anyone who has replaced shocks would be good :-)

Here's whats happened so far:

1.Got front corner on axle stand
2.Got bottom bolt off orig shocker
3.Got top bolt off orig shocker using strap wrench to hold shocker still while turning bolt under bonnet.
4.Got old shocker completely off
5.Put new Gaz shocker on the top part and need to do top bolt up to 37nm...

...however...

What part of the new Gaz shocker do I put the strap wrench around to stop the top half turning while I'm tightening the bolt... see this picture:

Area A doesn't seem to work - it still turns...

Area B you can feel under the blue rubber part is a lot thinner than part A (e.g the top of part A ends at the line) so do I need to put the strap wrench around this part? Will it harm the rubber or top part underneath?

I'm still on the first shocker so could do with completing all four before I need to drive to work on Monday morning :-)

Last question - shall I take it to a garage and give up :-)

Cheers

Chris

ps. not doing anymore tonight cos its dark!

You should be able to put a small wrench on top of the shaft (up where the nuts start threading on). The shaft usually has a hex on the end of it for you to put your wrench on and hold it while you turn the nuts on with a wrench as you won't be able to get a socket onto it. Hopefully this helps you out. Good Luck

Got the tops tightened as much as I could in the end.... there must be an easier way :-) it was so fiddly to do the rear ones down in the engine bay...

Now just the tie bar bushes to do over the next couple of days...

And 3 wheel nuts to replace that got "trashed" when trying to come off.

Damn it... the front nearside one was having a squeaking session this morning at slow speed... guess that will be coming off again and more copper grease going on...

By the way... a question I forgot to ask when installing... if you look at the photo again - I've updated it...

Question is should I have done the installation with ALL four gold washers (pointed out with green lines) or with the middle two left out so that the bushes were right up against the bodywork mounts? The yellow line shows where the bodywork is in the setup..

Sorry Chris, been away on hols, & your link's not working for me now. If you're still not sure email the pic to mike at smallworld-it.com for a second opinion.

What settings did you go for? I can recommend +15 clicks all round for starters, seemed to work well on track and not too crashy on the road, going +25 rear/+20 front feels no worse on the road but I'm yet to try this on track.

Hi Mike,

I've just changed PC at work so I need to change the link then I'll let you know.

Cheers

Hey Mike,

The link should work again now...

And also... I cranked all the shocks up to 10 clicks and it felt better than at 0...
