MG MGF Technical - V6 into a F?
Has this been done and anybody got any info on the possabilities?? just been offered a V6 from a rolled ZS so maybe ...

MG themselves are said to have looked into this - and running prototypes have allegedly been spotted from time to time. So the bottom line is, yes it can be fitted. But this is not necessarily an easy job. Primary problem is space. The KV6 has a wide Vee angle (90 degrees). Roger Parker measured things up, and reckoned that the engine would fit in on top of the standard transmission, but there would be some problems related to the front bulkhead (the one that contains the fuel tank). To install the engine, Rog felt that some metal bashing and reforming was going to be required. I am not entirely sure whether the fuel tank would need relocating (Andrew "Scarlet Fever" Philips was working on the assumption that it would be necessary) - so perhaps you'd also need to investigate a Porsche 911/Boxter fuel tank arrangement in the front compartment. So yes, achievable. But also a challenge! I hope you do decide to do it - and then tell us all about your achievement! :o) Good luck

I too would certainly like to see this done. However, even given that you can get the engine in - you might want to consider :- 1) exhaust pipes - how would you get efficient manifolds and pipes in - ineffecient exhaust would kill any benefit. 2) just how would you change the spark plugs in the forward engine bank ? or repair an HGF on this bank. In fact, any work here is an engine out job - not easy when the engine is shoe-horned in. In short, the MGR KV6 is not the ideal V6 to put into the F. The VW VR6 is probably better, as it's really a 'fat' in-line, or single-bank V; so maintenance would be possible. Has anyone (outside MGR) managed to put something other that an in-line K-series into an F ?

A short while ago, someone stated that they'd fitted a Rover T16 turbo into an F Steve. This thread should be in the recent technical archives. Might be possible to fit a Honda 2 litre VTEC if you were so minded, given that the PG1 gearbox is Honda derived. Also on this same line of thought, the BMW Mini Cooper S supercharged unit would also be a candidate, given that the Mini's gearbox is a dual synchro version of the PG1... I agree with Steve though, the VW VR6 would be the best 6 cylinder engine choice.

Thanks guys for the comments, I guess it wouldn't be a straight 'drop in' without some complications. In essence the front bulkhead modified, rear bulkhead modified, petrol tank up front, better balence anyway. exhausts should be ok with a custom job made up for it.Heads and cams can be tweaked for extra BHP preferably 225-240 bhp should be achievable. Now can anyone tell me the weight of a standards MGF engine 'fully dressed' as the V6 one is 154kg? The KV6 I feel might be too heavy and engine management compatability could pose a problem(?) Paul.

This was something i seriously considered for a while last year. Theoretically it is possible and, given that a supercharger costs £6500.00, it is cheaper to spend £4500.00 on a brand new KV6 and use the rest to get it fitted. As Rob pointed out, the only problem is the fuel tank, being situated vertically behind the passenger seat within the engine bay. The KV6, as mentioned previously is a 90 degree V and therefore the tank needs to be relocated to make room in the engine bay. My plan was to source a Porsche slab tank and fit it under the front bonnet, where the black plastic shroud panel is. It will probably need a safety cage for crash protection and there will need to be some minor bodywork to move the fuel filler to the front wing. This is all perfectly feasible, especially when you consider that there is a 'ready made' route for the fuel pipes within the transmission tunnel along side the gear linkage cables. If you remove the spare wheel and go the IMS route, then the available space under the front bonnet is massive. This is a mod just crying out to be done IMO, if it wasn't for my recent HGF causing me to go down the stage 1 head route i would be saving for it as i speak. SF
