MG MGF Technical - Wandering at high speed

After accelerating in a straightline to 70mph, my F developed a see-saw left to right. Very worrying. Found the tracking was way off and 38psi in the rears. Since tracking corrected and pressures set at 26front and 28rear there's been no repeat of the see-saw, alhough front is still a tad light. Will fit Toyo TR1 Proxes all round before trying a splitter.

The front end of the MGF will tend to be a bit light - there is aerodynamic lift at play (http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/aerodynamics/200HPD_aeropack.htm#aerodynamic)

This can be dialled out to some extent with a splitter, better tyres help too. Another solution is to alter the front tracking to non-standard 0 degrees 5 minutes toe IN on both front wheels, which really helps stabilize the car in a straight line (read more here: http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/suspension/tracking.htm)

Hope this helps

Thanks Rob, I was unaware F's were designed with built in lift, until I read your very informative article. Does anyone have experience of persuading their insurance company to permit a splitter to be fitted and for that matter, Toyo Proxes tyres?

I doubt that the insurance company would be too interested in your tyres - after all, so many cars of a certain age are fitted with all sorts of tyres. Usually different brands, different ratings and even remoulds! Fitting decent rubber shouldn't be a problem!

With regard to the splitter - check with your insurance company - but many find that their insurance company won't charge extra for it. If you do find problem, then I would recommend A-Plan, who run an MGF specific policy and have a very tolerant attitude towards modifications :o)

Jeff,

My car is lowered and I run 5 mins toe in at the front and I don't have any problems with the front being light at motorway speeds. I also have a KH splitter fitted, but to be honest I don't think that it makes that much of a difference to my car - I only fitted it because I got it for nothing.

5 mins toe in makes sense with decent rubber and no splitter - as a start. I'll do it when I get the car back - not this weekend, the mechanic still has it to trace valve/vvc rattle when warm.

Toyo Proxes? They wear down rapidy in my experience. I found Bridgestones much better, and good in the wet.
Dimo

No idea of wear rate (and don't care due to very low mileage as second car) but I had T1Rs fitted on Friday (replacing worn GSD2s on the front and nearly new Kumhos on the rear) and they have TRANSFORMED the car (TF160) - no tramlining, no pulling hard during acceleration, better balance.
