MG MGF Technical - Was their a non power steering column for MGF's

Did they ever have a non power steering version of the MGF column. Basically without the wiper motor strapped on it.

If not, is the MGF model an upgraded column from another rover model.

Cheers

Joe

yes they did, the EPAS was an option on early MPi cars.
Will Munns

Excellent, just need to find one now.
Joe

If you just want to remove assistance you can always take out the fuse?

May be this helps to understanding what's out there.

No idea when they stopped to deliver MGF without EPAS.
Dieter

1999 I think, but I don't know the VIN change... :o(
Rob Bell

Our 1.8 MPi first registered Dec 1 1997 was, I was told, one of the last Fs built without power steering VIN No SARRDWBGBWD030273. A bit stiff to park (not too bad with drive train not at front) but a finger-tip steering joy on the open road.
DG Welsh

Not sure if that's right. My 1998 1.8 MPi VIN 501309 HAS power steering.
Nick

Doh! I see what you mean now DG. Ignore my last post!
Nick

Thanks DG :o)
Rob Bell

Thanks guys, I did consider removing the motor unit from the column and use the column anyway but seemed a waste of a good EPAS column.

I strip MGF's as donor vehicles for a car we build (www.specialistautomotive.com)so like to try and use as many MGF bits as we can, we use the instrument binnacle, stalks, and I would like to use the ign lock if possible hence sticking with an MGF column in the hope all this will still fit.

But so far not even managed to find a picture of one just for comparison etc.

Thanks

Hmm - I don't recall ever seeing a picture of a non-EPAS steering column here before? Dieter?
Rob Bell

My Feb 98 MPi is non power assisted

;) beep, beep... see above and here again.

On top the without EPAS.
Dieter

LOL - should have thought about the epc Dieter! ;oD

That figure poses a long-dormant question in my head; is it possible to retro fit a height-adjustable steering column to an earlier F? And what would be involved? A straight swap, or not?
Rob Bell

Thanks Dieter, is it identical apart from the motor, for instance will part number 4 in the drawing fit all the columns, it lists different part numbers for LHD and RHD but not EPAS, so could be lucky their as I kept that part.

Thanks

Joe

Joe

I think that the non EPAS rack has more turn for
lock-lock, to make it easier to park. So removing the motor from an EPAS unit might make it slightly more difficult to park.
Keith

Well I managed to find a manual column, QMB100910, good news is the steering lock, ign swicth all fit fine, but the lower steering column link, part number 4 in the parts pic above are different.
Splines and diameter are different where they join the main column.

So if your going to do a conversion to manual for racing etc, get both bits of the column.
