MG MGF Technical - Water Level Sensor - Lamp Wiring...

I’ve just bought and fitted the B&G water level sensor kit after renewing the under floor coolant pipes with stainless steel replacements (nice piece of kit… and the peace of mind it brings is even nicer !!) and for the moment I have left the lamp unwired.

I really fancy wiring it into one of the spare lamps in the dash and I know Rob has used the ‘Catalyst Overheat Lamp’ I just have two questions:

1. Rob mentioned a separate bulb holder with a green wire/ black wire with yellow tracer – Is there a bulb already in the holder?

2. Has anyone located these wires elsewhere on the car, so that I can connect into them without having to remove the instrument panel? (hence the question about there being a bulb already in the holder)

3. What other solutions have people used?

Okay, so it was three questions !!!

I must admit to only having the bleeper - I think that will get your attention soon enough without having to spend the next 6 months trying to sort all the rattles from a dismantled dash :)

I binned the oversize 1960s style lamp they supplied and fitted a 12v red LED in the centre console between the window switches using a black LED clip (Maplin supplied parts). As the LED is 12v it does away with fitting the usual resistor in the circuit. The result is a much neater appearance but can still be seen without any probs.

I bought the kit from B&G at Stoneleigh and the led is now a less obtrusive size.

I didn't bother to remove the front console, I just drilled through the lefthand spare switch blank, then fed in the wire and led. Taking off the lefthand triangular panel in the footwell allows access to the wire, then it was just a matter of threading it up the side of the console to the cigarette lighter. Form here on there is no option but to remove the console and t-bar, (which pull aways straight upwards - be prepared for some of the plastic plugs to come away).

The main point to remember is not to put the plug on the end until you are happy with the wiring run.

The alarm gives 3 very loud beeps, but the first and last sound a bit asthmatic. Other than that I'm very please with it.

Sorry can't answwer your question on lamp, but like Steve, i too went to maplins. I bought a rectangular red led. then took out one of the switch blanks.

with a small drill bit I drilled about one third of the way down from the top of the blank 3 holes in a line just short of the width of the led. Then with some wet and dry paper (using it dry) and folded I opened the whole to make a rectangular hole exactly the same size as the led. It took a bit of fiddling and patience but the led fits snugly in the rectangular hole and flush. I then used araldite glue poured in from behind to hold it in place added a resistor and wired it up.

It looks perfect and unlike the round leds doesn't protrude but sits flush with the surface of the switch blank, so it doesn't look like a Diy job.

I had a spare blank when I added the flog light switch so if it went horribly wrong its easy to just stick in the spare blank.

Thanks for the comments - It's true, the lamp supplied now is much smaller than the previous '1960's style' one and wouldn't look out of place on the centre console. However, I've replaced my console with one from a MK II car (no room between the switches) and as I have aircon I don't have any blanks (I use the spare front fog switch to operate my remote boot release). I'm sure I could find a suitable location somewhere but I have my heart set on wiring it into the instrument pack...
