MG MGF Technical - what the f is all that clattering?

just been up the road in my car and whilst i couldn’t put the hardtop down i did wind the windows right down as it’s such a nice day. BUT, as i went past a wall i could hear the most dreadful tinny clattering sound bouncing back at me. closer inspection indicates it coming out of the offside air intake. whatever it is, something is pretty loose in there - could be something daft like a bracket which has a habit of working loose? OR IS MY CAR GOING TO BLOW UP? :O(

Tony, somebody will give you the full SP on fans and cooling vents but the side vents are only held in with 2 screws - why not take a quick look. If it is serious you will know much quicker than waiting for a BBS reply from an expert.

unfortunately i’m stuck in work now until 5 so it’s going to be dark when i get to the car park. it’ll have to wait till i get home.
i’ve just thought - isn’t in line with the intake the area where the exhaust ‘joins’?

Tony,

The mesh covering the air intake is only attached to the plastic surround by some silicon.

Perhaps it is simply vibrating.

Good luck!

thanks sam i’ll check that but it’s a whole lot noisier than mesh!
will let you know. only 50 mins before i set off for home (30 miles and i’m scared LOL!)

Remove the side intake grills which cover a black plastic insert, this could be loose and rattling.

Remove that and you have a fan which could be loose, also whilst you are looking check for rust at this point as it has been found behind the inserts.

The noise could be engine based and just being funnelled through the intake pipes, lift the boot grill and rev the engine from the throttle body assembly whilst listening for any unusual rattles/noises. Knocking could indicate engine wear.

Alternator bracket bolt sometimes works loose so this is also worth checking.

The only real answer is investigate all avenues until the source is found but I hope my suggestions may help.

Chris

Probably the exhaust heat cover which sometimes rattle until they get warm.
