MG MGF Technical - Whats the best engine oil to use

What is the best engine oil to use in my MGF? Simple, I always used Magnatec in my Probe.

Mobil 1
Unless oil consumption is significant - in which case I would (/will!) use a semi-synthetic 10w-40 eg Esso (Exxon/Mobil)

Two points
- there are two different grades of Mobil 1 available in UK, I now use the more viscous grade.
- anyone know where I can get a list of Esso service stations that stock Mobil 1 ? I get a 60percent discount from s/stns (as opposed to Halfords), so would much rather buy there.

Anything on the net Steve?

Not from the Exxon/Mobil web sites.
My local Esso station's linked to a Tesco Express, so you can buy all manner of groceries, but there's a very limited supply of car bits - no Mobil 1.
I had to buy my last top-up at Halfords :-( 11 quid/litre !

Oeer I cant remember when I last changed the oil on the F? it will be less than 10,000 miole s ago i am sure...oeer

better do it soon

I would go fo the new 5w-40 Amsoil oil. Look at the API classification, the different tests (pour point, no ack, 3bearing, viscosity at 100C etc) and compare the oils, you'll see that amsoil is way ahead, unfortunately they are not very known over here.

But the spec in the owners manual says 10W/40? Would your go for synthetic oil or mineral?
Jim Kenny

I think Steve answered your question - use a synthetic. You have a big choice Mobil 1 0-40, Castrol RS 0-40, Amsoil, Neo, Royal Purple, Shell, Esso, Halfords, Rockoil, Millers, Torco to name but a few. The manual states 10-40 as a guide for our climate but anything between 0-50 would do.

Hi,

There is a synthetic oil study going on at http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html which you might find interesting.

It's in an American car, and takes some time, but Mobil 1 went to 18k before it needed replacing, which is fairly reassuring. They're testing Amsoil at the moment, which is thickening and may not last the distance.

What came out of the test is that wear is at its highest just after a change of oil - contrary to what one might think but backed up by independent tests at Ford (I think). Also the quality of the oil is greatly enhanced by top-ups, so an engine that uses a little oil is a good thing. A mid-way change of filter also gets an improvement in debris levels.

So, run the oil for the full 12k between changes, change the filter at 6k, and top up frequently (if you need to) for long engine life.

Oh yes, which oil? I use Mobil 1. I know Mobil is a huge money-making enterprise, and the oil is vastly expensive in the UK compared to the US, but it always does well in tests, and my engine runs very sweetly! (yes, I do top up from time to time.)

Regards, Kes.

Very interesting Kes!
Let's see whos the winner, my bet :
Amsoil better in wear, but doesn't last that long.

@The oil is thickening:
This means, that the FILM is thicker at higher temperatures too, which is a good thing (TM)
See : (Viscosity index at 100C for varios 10w-60, 0w-40 oils)

Kev says,
Duckhams, there is no alternative.
