MG MGF Technical - Which K&N?

Hi all.

Looking to fit a K&N 57i kit, posibly via a Rover 820 airbox, to my 1.8MPi. I've been looking at eBay to try to pick a kit up second hand.

Question is; are there lots of different types of K&N57i? A lot of ads are for K&N57i filters or kits, but specified as for (for example) a Sierra Cosworth or Peugeot 205. Do I need to wait for a 57i specifically for the F to come up for grabs, or will any of these 57is do? And is it possible to ruin a filter, or can I be confident that one that's been ragged in some Nova will clean up ok?

Also, if I go for the airbox method, then simply the filter itself (as opposed to the kit) with bits and bobs from Halfrauds is all that's needed? There seem to be a lot of just filters for sale.

Thanks,
Jamie

There is a specific kit for the F. It comes with pipes to feed air from the underside of the car, and a spacer pipe to attach the filter to the throttle body.

If you are going to use the airbox method then you do not need the air pipes, but you will need the filter/Throttle body connector pipe. You can fit without but I seem to recall that there is a loss of performance without it. 8-O

Try here for a new kit at a very good price. http://dcdezign.com/aspitems.asp?model_no=knfilters.asp&product=K%26N%20Induction%20%20Kits
I got mine from this guy and have no complaints at all.

Jamie, if you're going down the 820 airbox route, then the choice of K&N is unlimited - it just needs to have an adequate rating (say power of 200-250bhp - that way you know you'll get adequate airflow for your car), and that dimensionally, it will fit inside the airbox...

If you want, I'll measure a cone filter for you to give you the maximum permissible length?
Rob Bell

That'd be good, Rob - thanks.

Phil - is there anything special about the filter - throttle body pipe? Money's reasonably tight at the moment, so if I can get this for a fifth of the price and DIY then I'll go for it!

It's all Tech-Speed's fault. When they gave me a lift back to the train station, they let me drive their modded F. I want...

btw, Roy said you were coming in the next day, Rob - something about an experimental cooling system for the engine? Any news yet?

I stand corrected. Didn't realise you could use any adequately rated filter, Sorry.

Re Connector pipe, I have just looked at the install section of this page (Rob's Site) http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/airbox_pix/airbox_pages/airbox.htm and it seems that this is not required.

No news yet on that cooling system Jamie - I think that the chaps are still waiting for the first batch of ECU's to arrive...

Could you have a quick look at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2461345435&category=36680#ebayphotohosting please guys? Is that what I want, or do I need to email him to try to confirm what it is?

Thanks,

Not ideal I'm affraid Jamie: the filter outlet is much larger than the one used for the MGF - and if you plan to use it in conjuction with the 820 airbox, then it won't sadly fit :o(

To install this filter to an MG's throttle body, you'll need to buy a reducer pipe (Samco do one) that'll take the internal diameter down from 80mm to the correct 70mm.

Personally, I'd keep looking for something a little more suitable.
Rob Bell

Bother. Thanks for saving me a fiver, anyway!

I suppose that the critical dimension is not the outlet size (as the box itself will be connected via tubing to the throttle body rsather than the filter) but the height of the filter so that it sits into the airbox. Don't suppose that you know off the top of your head what length that is?

Cheers,
Jamie

btw - anyone done any research into how turbulent effects in combining multiple inlet tubes to a box (ie from both side vents plus under car a la Tom Randall's kit) slow airflow? I assume there is an optimum combinatory flow - wonder what it is?
Jamie

I think that the critcal length is a little bit more than 15cm. Sorry, I didn't get a chance to measure it last night...
