MG MGF Technical - Window goes clunk & does not drop

The passenger window on my early MGF goes clunk, clunk when lowered electrically.

Taking the inner door trim off I see tha the windows are glued into two u-shaped carriers. the front has gome unstuck....

That glue and how much/what cleaning preparation do I need to do ?

Hi,

the adhesive is a kind of rubber. I think strong silicon as used for frameless aquarius basins may do.

Heard of this problem only once here at the BBS in 2001. Russ A., I think.
He had troubles with the U-shape plastic itself. At his very early from 1995 one side just broke off. I sent him the dismantled parts from my wreck and he used silicon.

Some pix of the parts are here.

May I suggest may be a problem with the sealant round the window when it enters the door, rather than the grip from the frame? Perhaps the window seal has become clogged and is exherting more pressure on the window than is required?

Leigh, you are right, the sealant sticking around the window edge probably caused the "unsticking" of the window from the front U shaped carrier in the first place. Now its unstuck, I need to stick it back before the rear U shaped carrier comes unstuck.

When we talk of silicon, are we taking the type of bathroom sealant or something more with a firmer grip ??

If the fit's still quite tight in the clamp with the existing rubber, then if you fixed the problem with the sticking window, surely there would then be sufficient 'grip' on the window to move it up and down? The problem is it's trying to pull the window down when it's sticking, but if you removed that resistance then refitting the original clamp might be enough to hold the fixed window?

Had the same problem on my Rover 200 few years back. After trying several glues I came accross some Araldite specifically for glass in Homebase.
I scored the old 'rubber' with a knife before applying the glue and put pleanty around the edges of the clamp.
Was still stuck 2 years later when I sold the car!
