MG MGF Technical - Windscreen Wiper problem

A friends 75LE has a problem where the wipers seem to be a bit erratic.
"Wipers work on fast wipe (and single fast wipe) but tend to struggle and stop halfway across the screen on intermittent/slow speed and slow single wipe"

If it was the motor, I'd expect all speeds to be affected, similarly for a dodgy linkage.

Has anyone else had this issue (I don't recall hearing of it)

Any suggestions, much appreciated.

Could it be a problem with the windscreen wiper 'park sensor'? The intermittent wipe probably only sends a short duration signal to start the motor in motion. The complete wipe is then completed until the wiper are back in the park position.

If this were the case, then switching off the wipers from regular wipe speed will also occasionally see the wipers stop mid-stroke as it were.

Check for bad joints on the Red/Light Green wire to the wiper motor. Also check the connection of the socket onto the Wiper stalk switch in the steering column. The socket may be loose. Other problem could be a corroded connection inside the wiper motor itself. The motors are known to leak water.

Check for water damage by carefully removing the casing of the motor (in situ). Remember there is a powerfull magnet inside which will try to prevent the removal of the casing. From memory there are two nuts or screws holding the casing onto the motor.

Russell,
I'm into windscreen wipers at the moment!!! See my thread on the General BBS.
Anyway, there's 3 brushes in the motor.
I suspect one ,or more, of these is wearing out( or sludged up ) ,making poor contact.
I've had a similar fault in the past and it required a new motor.

Bruce - you got it spot on I'm afraid. Water ingress into the motor casing. Two torx head screws.

So, the next question is how does the water get in and how to stop it?
Russell Parslow

some is running through the gearbox ...
There's also a small rectangual drain hose attached. *Unfortunately* this drain hole is located higher then the point where the water gets in :)

However. No water will ever get to the wiper motor when you always drive only with the large black plastic cover mounted into the bonnet.
