MG MGF Technical - Windscreen wiper setup

The plastic ball joint on one of my wipers failed and due to the delay in shipping parts from the UK I decided to repair the arms until I could get a new one shipped.

I cut off the plastic ends and welded studs into the ends of the links, fitted rose joints to these, cut off the balls on the arms and drilled them to enable the rose joints to be bolted thru.

All is now OK except I cannot get the wipers to wipe over the area that they used to and park correctly.

Is there a setup procedure that anybody knows in relation to correct positioning of the wiper motor crank, wiper arms etc.??

Only the short arm at the motor could get adjusted in small steps.
You need to loosen the nut and rotate the arm.

Deiter,

not sure what you mean.

The left side wiper seems OK, the right side is the one not parking properly it wipes all the way down to the bottom of the screen and then moves up about 100mm before stopping.

There are a couple of lines on the starter motor housing that show where the crank should be when parked. These lines are on the bck of the motor so you have to take the whole unit out of the car to check.

Chris ?? :-/
Phil's on the wiper ;-) No 1. April joke :)

Anyway, I think the problem could relate to the wrong length of the repaired arm ? I'm afraid, I don't know.

I've no solution in this case than a comparison with a correct mounted assy.
This one is from a LHD car.

May be you get the final idea how to adjust the parts.

In case typo.
Phil, do you mean this lines at the _wiper_ motor back ?

On rereading if you have not taken off the crank, there is no reason why it should be out of adjustment, but probably worth checking.

If you do decide to take out the motor, it's worth checking the insides for water and rust. Mine worked ok, but I was astonished at just how bad the rust was.

Thanks Guys,

I had another attemt at adjusting the arm as Deiter suggested and have got it about 95% right.

To set up the wipers I undid the motor arm nut and ran the motor for a couple of cycles then turned it off and tightened the motor arm nut, Installed the wiper arms back in the parked position and tried the wipers again. The drivers side wipes down to the bottom of the glass before returning to the park position, which I beleive, as deiter suggested is due to a slight difference in the length of the repaired arm. I will play around with the length as now I have rose joints fitted I can lengthen or shorten the arm by about 6mm each way.
