MG MGF Technical - Windstops

Can anyone advise please ? I've been offered an MGR mesh windstop.Haven't seen it but does it need drilling to fit, also will it interfere with the plastic rear window when top is down or should it be removed completely. Ibelieve the WS folds flat when not in use. Any info gratefully received.

The genuine MGR windstop requires two holes to be made in the plastic T bar - captive nuts are already in place in the metal section.

It folds flat when not in use and yes it can rub against the plastic window, when lowering or raising the windstop, but only if you are careless.

Had ours since they first came out - no others to select from those days - but well pleased with it.

Me too!

Hello Mike, it does rub against the rear screen but in the two years we had one did not cause any problem.

I'd recommend them, although we changed ours for MGF Centre roll-hoops as my wife caught site of a rolled MGF and nearly flipped herself (excuse pun), and insisted we fit hoops, despite my reassurance that you'd have to be a right nutter to roll the car ;-)

They do cut down the wind beating very well.

Rob Bell of the blue wig has an interesting article on his website about windstops.

Don't mistake them for rollbars because they are not. The windscreen surround has proved itself on a number of occasions reported on here to be perfectly adequate in case of capsize - at least if your head is below the top frame and you wear your seatbelt.

Note for Ted

Later Rover windstops are not quite as tall as the very early original design thus overcoming any possibility of touching rear screen.

I swapped to the newer many years ago, is yours c. 1996?

They're still excellent, has wife's full seal of approval for long topless journeys ;-)

John

PS I still have the original one available if anyone wants it - sans fixings I'm afaid.

John

Yes - 1996 or early 97 model.
Ted Newman

Tony, reassure your wife - I'm living proof!

Drawings are on my website in case someone has the skill to machine some.

And as for the excessive height of the early design windstop.
There's a solution of cut the windstop frame at the lower T-joins and reshape the net with adhesive.
Not on my site, but I've seen it anywere on the internet.

No reason to drop anything to garbage.
:)

More on the upper half of this doc.

I have a glass Mike Satur one I bought at Silverstone one year, it does not require drilling and has been superb.
