MG MGF Technical - WIRE ROUTING AND POWER

I posted a thread in the general section re fitting a speed camera detector.

I need to site the unit on the dash. I would like to run a wire down the back/through the grills that demist the windscreen to a power source that will be 12v and which will only be on when the ingntion is on and which i can then earth.

Where do i run the cable from/to and how do i get it fed up through the vents or through the back of the dash???

The passenger side demister vent is the easiest to gain access to, but first you'll have to remove glove box (http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/glove_box_removal.htm)

The next steps should be pretty obvious, but since this is not something I've previously attempted, I've not got any pix or handy hints :o.

If you look at the instrument cowel thread, dieter has lots of pics of the dash from all angles, it would be easy to dill a hole in the air tract and fit a blanked grommet to pass the wire thru to below

run a wire to the back of the stereo, from there chose purple for always on or green for switched with the ignition

Purple for always on,
Light green with a white stripe for switched with the ignition.

Looking at the diagram can I take a wire from the fusebox itself ? Could I by doing so make sure it was covered by the fuse?

You _could_, but the wires to the stereo are much easier to get to, the fusebox is quite, errm busy.
By taking from the radio your are sure it is covered by the fuse anyway.

Cool - one last question - is the best way in your opinion to simply divide the wre and to use a block to splice them or would you use a better method??

If you look under the high level brake light thread, you will see me recommending something that someone later called scotchlock (sp?), they are blue plastic connectors which splice a wire into an existing wire, available from Halfords, you just push in the old wire from the side, and the new wire from the back, clse the connector (you might want a pair of plyers her to push it fully home) and job done, no stripping, no ends to come loose and short against anything, no way that the original circuit is comprimized.

Apparantly has to be protected by a 3A fuse - ice appears to be 10A fuse..... but one thing that occurs to me is that the thing can be run through the cigar lighter (though it does not work) - that would have a much higher rating woul;dnt it????

Also 10Amps,
You could put an inline fuse behind the radio (where you splice into the wires there) that way you can get at it it if ever blows, I would still use the radio wires though.
