MG MGF Technical - Would these work on an F?

OK, so this may seem like a daft question but does anyone know if these would work with an F.

http://www.surfing-waves.com/shop/fcs_rack.htm

I thought it might as the framework or the roof seems pretty solid. It's not got to take any real weight, just a couple of 8' surfboards, so wind resistance would be more of a problem than weight I think. If this is the most stupid idea in the world ever, tell me, I won't be offended.

Cheers

I don't think that this would work Phil. Looking at the picture (http://beckersurf.com/Images/Products/1617.jpg), the 'rack' is kept in place by tightly drawing the straps over the roof.

However, you're likely to excessively 'squeeze' the softtop, if you know what I mean? Might work with a hard top though...

Might be worth firing off an email to see what they think (i.e. will it work on the Mazda MX-5/ Miata or whatever its called in the US)...

When Janet ( the wife) had James ( my boy) we (mistakenly and foolishly )had a Cavalier Convertiwobble.

For our touring holiday to Southern France I got a set of 4 suction pads to make a roof rack on the boot to take James's Massive pram...yes I know!!!!

It worked very very well and was only £35 quid or something, the pads didnt blow off at all most amazing!

Get the board on the bootrack Phil, there are standard MGF botracks available, yes wind resistance will be the problem, and yes it is a rather unfortunate idea sorry mate, bt so is

a) having a Vauxhall particulalry a Convetiwobble
b) having a mother inlaw who buys the biggest pram this side of the atlantic

Janet soon after (was) bought a Lancia Delta Hatchback...MORE LIKE ITTT!!!

Nice idea but I reckon they'd be a bit of a disaster waiting to happen on an F :-/
In the catalogue photo an estate car is shown with the board within it's full dimensions, so airflow will simply pass under the board, between it and the roof then out the other end with the overall vehicle aerodynamics being largely unaltered. I wonder what it would be like for the F. If the board is eight feet long, the F's flat roof area is say, three feet in length, that leaves 2.5 feet poking out both in front and behind, and boards are what, two feet wide?.
What just 60mph of slipstream would do when it gets under the leading or trailing edge of 5 sq ft of unsupported surf board is anyone guess.
Cannonball Bob

do what I do, put the roof down and stick them in the passenger footwell.

I can get windsurfing boards and rigs in there for short trips and its fine.

Thanks for the thoughts here guys.

I have a boot rack but think that if the wind could get under a pretty flatly stored board as per Bob's reply, then the angle would create big probs for sure. I like the footwell idea, but am pretty sure that Lorna would not want to be hugging it for the 4.5 hour journey from Leicester to Cornwall ;)

Back to square one I think, might have a look for a cheapo estate oil burner or something.

Boards in the footwell; Lorna on the rack. Sorted.

I've driven with trees in there. And if I'm on a tip trip with 4 sacks of garden refuse, it always raises a laugh with the tip lads - something about the F resembling a mobile skip.

Might it be worth constructing a structure on the boot rack that'll enable you to carry the board flat - perhaps attached to the boot rack at the rear and to the windscreen rail at the front?

Seems a shame to buy a crappy car just so you can go surfin' :o(
Rob Bell

I think I've cracked it ;-)

Reminds me of a comment my Brother made after i had my F-ONE spoiler fitted. I had parked the car in a pub car park with the roof down and he wandered in and casualy said "Someone's left a shopping trolly in the carpark!"

Perfect! ;o) LOL

Yep, and essentially the same problem would occur with a board laying flat on the roof protruding over the windscreen when the slipstream is directed up over the roof and meets the underside of the board.
Anyway, I thought all you "surf-doods" drove VW camper vans in varying shades of primer? ;-)

Nah can only ever go for a weekend and if I went in one of those by the time I got there I would have to turn around and come back again. Lol.

Seriously though, have you seen the price of those things.

There is a cracking MKII Granada Estate on ebay that I am trying to convince Lorna is a good idea (with very little success I might add).
Phil Brindley

You get the Granny Estate, I'll buy an old Capri and we'll re-enact episodes of the Professionals.
Cannonball Bob

Damn, now I have got the tune in my head I just know it is going to be there all day !!

Could you not hire surf boards when you get down to Cornwall - got to be cheaper and then Lorna would not have to hug a board for 4.5 hours!!!!

Hi Jan, That's what I've been doing up til now but there comes a point when you need consistency in the equipment you use. So the time is approaching when I will need to buy a board.
