MG MGF Technical - Zip

Help! I lowered my rear screen over this glorious weekend, and the Tab that you pull on the rear screen Zipper snapped, leaving a "C" section of metal still attached/ fitted to the zip and the leather/ metal tab broken off in my hand. I have temporarily fitted wire through the hole so i can still pull the zip closed. But I would like to fit a replacement Tab, can this be done? and where can i get one?

I get this problem with my motorcycle gear - I use key rings, about 1 inch diameter works well.

Mike, this is EXACTLY the problem I was dreading in the other thread where the subject of the zip came up; that and the teeth not meshing!! It's happened on a couple of our tent closures.

Mike,

It's obviously that time of year. Just did exactly the same on my screen's zip, except the "c" section must have snapped completely as the leather tab has just a couple of bits of plastic left and the zip fastner just a hole. Think I'll try Ted's idea. Thanks Ted!

Mike,
This broke on my zip about 5 years ago!
The answer, as far as I am concerned, is only to unzip the window when you intend to leave it down for an extended period (>1 day?).
My window does not seem to have suffered from repeated short-term folding.

Try any tip because the last resort is to get a Coach Trimmer to fit a complete new zip (both sides) and they will charge 2 arms and 3 legs. It then becomes sensible to consider MGF Centre for a s/h Mk 2 hood and get less seams, newer rubbers, newer screen and zip.

The softtop windows approach to changine the screen involves splitting the zip all the way (in other words taking the metal clip off the end and unzipping untill the head comes off) If you can do this why can't you just stick a new zip head on? (answer is you can, just you have to find someone who stocks zip heads of the right size!).

Softtop windows will know the size of the zip and therefor the size of the head, when I brough some heads last year they were 50p a head (not for this zip, but for one of a simmiler size)

I think that spraying some sort of silicon on the zipper might help long term - say Pledge, Armour-all or similar.

That would cut the friction down. I also think that you should only zip/unzip the window with the header clips undone to release the tension.

I must say that I don't think the zip should be used regularly - looks like a disaster waiting to happen.
